West Ham suffer worst start to a season in 52 years following defeat to Leeds

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to Sky Sports: “It’s a simple explanation. We didn’t deal with the problems. We didn’t deal with many things. We have to work hard and be much better. I feel the players want to, but they switch off in many moments.

On first half change: “It was not working out and we needed to make a change. We were not dealing with our defensive situations and felt like we needed a striker to hold the ball, so maybe that’s not the greatest from me. These kind of mistakes are unacceptable in the Premier League.

“In the second half we played good, but 45 minutes is not enough after you start so badly and have a mountain to climb. There is still time. It is our responsibility to get the best out of the players.

“Tomorrow we work. Now is the time for sadness. Let’s keep on going. We need the fans since we arrive, it’s up to us. We need to give them something to deserve that support.”

“Roll your sleeves up, dig in” 😤

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen, speaking to Sky Sports: “Not good enough. We started well against Brentford the other day and wanted to do the same, but the way we defended the goal was really poor. We wanted to get back into it. From a corner again, it’s not brave enough. It always felt like one goal could get a bit of confidence. We did that, but it’s too late.

“Probably a lot of reasons why. But a dressing room when you’re second bottom of the league is low. The only way this will change is if we step up and show some fight. We need more of that. It’s easy to hide and be scared almost. It’s easier said and harder to do sometimes. Roll your sleeves up and dig in. No one will give this to us. We’re in a real situation and we have to face the reality of that. You have to face up to the reality of where we are and we’re in trouble now.

“We have to go out there and fight more than anything. The Premier League is the hardest league. We’re not playing well and not getting results. We need to change it. We’re the only ones that can change it.

“We’ve talked as a group, but it’s down to the players as well. We speak to each other, but there’s only so much. It’s got to come from within. We can show it a lot more. Nine games we’ve had, one win and we’re second bottom. We haven’t been great at home, but now is the time to roll your sleeves up.”

Leeds boss Daniel Farke, speaking to Sky Sports: “First of all, I’m delighted to take the three points. It is difficult to explain how we were standing there after the last three games with one point. We had much more domination and controlled the performance. We had a difficult week, in terms of illnesses and injuries.

“It was a difficult week for us. You could feel it. We showed passion and bravery.

“In the last 20 minutes you could feel it was a difficult week. A big fighting spirit, will and passion to bring it over the line.

“It is good for confidence to bring it over the line. A priceless three points.

“Of course, we spoke about set-pieces. We spoke about a few things we wanted to explore.

“Today we had to be smart in terms of our game management. They prepared to give all our energy today. Overall, the lads dug in and stuck together. A lot of fighting spirit today and we earned the three points.”

“It shows how strong a group we are” 💪

Leeds United forward Brenden Aaronson, speaking to Sky Sports: “It is huge for us. We have been a little unlucky with results.

“To stick it out and get the result is huge for us. I have been working hard at it and last week I got unlucky with one, but that is how football is. I am proud of myself.

“It shows how strong of a group we are. We were unlucky with the result [against Burnley], but we bounced back. We have got to keep going from here.

“The fans were fantastic today and they were behind us all game.”

Leeds United defender Joe Rodon, speaking to Sky Sports: “It was important to show a reaction after last weekend. It was important to come out the traps early, and I’m delighted with the three points.

“I think every team is difficult in this league. I’m a bit frustrated to concede at the end, but overall delighted with the three points.

“It was important to keep that momentum and make it difficult for teams to come here.”

Here’s how fans reacted as West Ham suffer worst start to a season in 52 years following defeat to Leeds…

@TroyClarkWhelan: After the Everton performance, I genuinely expected us to pick up at least four points from Brentford and Leeds. But awful starting line-ups, formations, and substitutions have left us with zero points. It’s no surprise we started playing better from the 64th minute onward.

@WestHam_Central: Nuno out, no excuse for starting that midfield

@jakedraper9: Don’t let them back in the changing room they can stay and have their debrief in the hammering rain

@leedsboygrant23: I’d be seriously worried if you’re allowing Aaronson to put in performances like that

@Jayallanents: Irving, Kilman & todibo should never pull the shirt on again. If the Portuguese Uncle Albert can’t see how bad the 3 of them are then we really are beyond help!

@DonMoyes11: Either give the manager his backroom staff or sack him if he’s gonna keep tanking lineups like that. Send Tubby Dough to Guantanamo Bay for crimes to football.

@fplwithmatt: Fun fact for you – the year Derby County were relegated with 11 points they had more points after 9 games (5) than West Ham this season (4)

@parmadiggyd: If Leeds had some quality that could have been 4 or 5 nil. If that was a top 6 team you’d have been done 7-0. How you let Aaronsson and Ampadu just walk through your midfield. Worrying times for you

@DE4CG: Even Burnley beat us, one of the worst teams the Prem has seen in years, embarrassing. Enjoy the Championship

@baracca47: Another poor performance. Usual problems. Need to start picking our best players in the positions they are most comfortable in. Absolutely no new manager bounce. Onto 2 home matches. Going down at this rate. #COYI

@LWillbourne: That result is on the managers first half line up …the midfielders in last 25mins clearly miles better than the ones on the first hour .why is a 42m signing not starting why is potts not starting never puts a foot wrong .

@LeedsWoody1919: Worst team I’ve seen at Elland Road since us when we went down

@whuchr: The players are absolutely awful, a disgrace, horrendous but Nuno is relegating us, mind blowing decisions. I can’t believe I’m saying this already but does he need to go for survival?

@bethgabriel_: It’s kinda bad when Aaronson scores against you 🥲

@WestHamJoshV: West Ham are in a relegation battle and have a manager with the audacity to experiment with starting line ups and players in wrong positions. Genuinely feels like the current team and club in general may be beyond saving.
