Here’s how fans on Twitter reacted to the FA Cup Second Round Proper draw…

@Tommy_Oldham1: MK Dons away Summed up shite draw maybe playing them in the cup will break the hoo doo and finally win there. #oafc #facup

@laticssamuala: Feel like barrow could be a banana skin. But on another note few all non league ties meaning a few definitely heading into the 3rd round. Just what we want to see #FACup

@JackCla85633751: Of course we end up with the worst ground in the whole FA cup #saddlers

@camhepi: Peterborough away , winnable but would have loved a non league side away . #FACup

@NCAFCThoughts: Boreham Wood away in the FA Cup. Will have to be at our best to make it to the 3rd round given they’re going strong in the National League and hammered Crawley in the 1st round. Potential banana skin but a new ground for plenty of County fans.

@BarryLenton: FA Cup 2nd R. Slough v Macclesfield and Chelmsford v Weston Super Mare are two great ties and Buxton, who knocked Marine out, are away to Cheltenham. You can’t rule Buxton out either. Shaping up for a Buxton v Macclesfield Third Round match! 😉

@AntDuffy: Ripped every ounce of FA Cup excitement from me that has. Horrific. You couldn’t pic a worse draw across any round than those parasites away #oafc

@duncan_dine: Hoping for a sparkling game TWO Spa towns going head to head, second round FA Cup. COYR @CTFCofficial

@CSI985: He knocked us out of the FA cup last year as Barnsley Manager, let’s get him back for that please Vale. Great opportunity to get to the 3rd round. #pvfc

Fair to say it was quite the weekend, from high-scoring games to dramatic comebacks, and several non-league upsets against higher-division opponents.

National League side Carlisle United staged a stunning comeback from 2-0 down to beat Reading of League One 3-2 after extra time, thanks to a Regan Linney’s hat-trick which included two stoppage-time goals (98th-min equaliser) and the extra-time winner.

Boreham Wood (National League) thrashed Crawley Town (League Two) 3-0 at home, with goals from Matt Rush, Zak Brunt (pen), and Abdul Abdulmalik; Crawley reduced to 10 men.

Gateshead (National League) produced quite the shock against AFC Wimbledon (League One) 2-0 away, via Kain Adom and Fenton John.

Chelmsford City (National League South) dominated Braintree Town (National League) 4-1, with Lyle Taylor’s brace plus strikes from Jason Adigun and Jesurun Uchegbulam.

There was also a 9 goal thriller as Macclesfield (National League North) produced a 6-3 win against AFC Totton (National League South).

AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson said on defeat Gateshead, per Wimbledon Guardian: “The performance, to be honest, was nowhere near what I expected from the group.

“That is what is frustrating for me, I can handle losing a game of football but not really in that way.

“We did not show up at all, it just looked like going through in the cup mattered more to them. It did not matter enough to us.

“We fight for every ball, I don’t think we did that today, I have to be honest. That has been a hallmark of my team. To see that missing hurts me.”

Gateshead manager Alun Armstrong said: “It is huge, I don’t think people understand what this club went through in the summer,” he added.

“There was a massive turnover, saying we are running on a skeleton staff is probably an understatement.

“There is four members of staff running the football side of things at this moment in time, and that is it.

“I am so pleased for the fans because they have been through the mill in the summer and you heard them, they never shut up from the first minute.

“It would be nice to be on their bus on the way home, I know what they are like, me being from the area myself.

“I know exactly what that bus is going to be like; it is going to be a messy one.”

Reading’s Leam Richardson on defeat to Carlisle, per Reading Chronicle: “I’m obviously disappointed with the result.

“I’ve only been here a minute, so I’m still learning a lot about people and the team and individuals.

“We’ve thrown a team together, with all the injuries that we’ve got, and some of the young lads have probably played together for the first time.

“In the whole 90 minutes, we probably saw exactly where we are as a football club.

“We just had a mad 10 minutes just as the [stoppage time] board went up, and then we struggled to recover our self-belief and our thought process.”

Carlisle manager Mark Hughes said: “Regan has been doing that all season.

“It’s no surprise anymore, the kid’s got something. As soon as he gets half a yard, he’s able to get so much power in his shots.

“He takes keepers unawares and they react too late. He’s always likely to hit the target.

“I’m really pleased for the lads. They stuck at it and never lost any of their belief, even when we were 2-0 down.

“As soon as we got one goal back, there was always a sense that we were going to kick on. We just got stronger and braver in possession.”
