The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a statement on X, welcomes the announcement of the agreement to secure a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza.
“I commend the diplomatic efforts of the USA, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey in achieving this significant progress. I am also encouraged by the support of the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority. Now, all parties must fully adhere to the terms of the agreement. All hostages must be safely released. A permanent ceasefire must be achieved. The suffering must end,” she states in her message.
She notes that “the EU will continue to support the rapid and safe delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. And when the time comes, we will be ready to assist in recovery and reconstruction. Today’s opportunity must be seized. It is the opportunity to chart a credible political path towards lasting peace and security. A path that will be firmly based on the two-state solution.”
The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, states that “the implementation of the (ceasefire agreement) paves the way for the long-awaited release of all Israeli hostages, the ceasefire in Gaza, and the end of the severe humanitarian crisis in the region,” while emphasizing that this is “a critical opportunity that must be seized to lay the foundations for lasting peace, based on a two-state solution.” (10/9/25)
