The NFL’s most intriguing rookie is potentially headed for the sideline.
The Jacksonville Jaguars listed wideout and defensive back Travis Hunter as limited during Thursday’s practice with a knee injury:
Hunter was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice but was downgraded after the injury.
Coming into the 2025 draft, the Heisman Trophy winner made it abundantly clear he wanted to remain a two-way player at the next level. The Jaguars acquiesced to that wish by giving him reps on offense and defense throughout the summer.
Still, it remains to be seen whether this experiment will actually work. Nobody in the modern history of the NFL has successfully played both ways to the degree Hunter is hoping.
A lot of the same questions applied when the 22-year-old enrolled at Colorado, and he excelled at receiver and cornerback.
But the level of physicality in the NFL is far different. It doesn’t take a medical degree to see Hunter could be at an increased risk of injury if he tries to carry over his college workload into the pros.
That’s to say nothing of the difficult in mastering two entirely different positions.
Through the first half of the 2025 season, Hunter has operated far more regularly on offense than defense, catching 28 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown.
The 2025 Jaguars had no shortage of subplots after falling well below expectations last year. First-year head coach Liam Coen was tasked with getting quarterback Trevor Lawrence back on track and making the franchise a contender once again.
Hunter’s usage within Jacksonville’s offense and defense remains one of the more captivating storylines. Now, so does his health heading into Week 9.
