Tienen launches “Senior Citizen of the Year” led by Alderman Wim Berge

Tienen (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Tienen launches the “Senior Citizen of the Year” award to honour seniors over 60, with nominations open until November 24, 2025. Alderman Wim Berge leads the initiative; the ceremony in early 2026.

As VRT News reported, the city of Tienen has started a new annual award called “Senior Citizen of the Year.” Tienen has around 10,000 seniors, and the city wants to give them more recognition. Alderman for Senior Citizens Wim Berge (Tienen Anders) said the award goes to people who have made a special contribution to their fellow human beings.

“We want to thank those who give their time to others and inspire kindness in our society,”

Berge said.

What makes Tienen’s new “Senior Citizen of the Year” award special for local seniors?

The award will be organised with the Tienen Seniors Network, which also acts as the city’s Seniors Council. Every resident can nominate a candidate aged 60 or older who resides in Tienen and contributes to the community. It can be through volunteer work, helping neighbours, or leading social projects.

Nominations are open until November 24, 2025, and forms can be found on the official city website. The award can only be won once. A jury of members from the Seniors Network will go through all nominations and select the winner based on their dedication and positive impact. The first award ceremony is planned for early 2026. It will be the first time Tienen officially honours its seniors for their efforts.

Other Belgian cities have already launched projects similar to Tienen’s new “Senior Citizen of the Year” award. In Leuven, the city has been selecting a “Senior of the Year” for several years to recognise older residents who participate in community work. Mechelen started its “Golden Senior” award in 2019 to recognise seniors who are active in local groups or social activities. Hasselt also introduced a “Senior Award” in 2020.
