As an avid hiker, I’m lucky to live in the Pacific Northwest—a region filled with parks, forests, and walking trails. Living in the Seattle area, I’m just a few hours from three national parks and countless trailheads scattered throughout various national forests. Seattle itself, although a large metropolitan area, gets its nickname, The Emerald City, from the abundant, year-round green foliage of its evergreen forests, parks, and natural landscapes that surround the city.
This means I hike and walk a lot, and after years of testing tons of outdoor gear, I can confidently say that the Fjallraven Abisko Tights have changed my perception of what hiking pants can be. They’ve become my go-to for just about every outdoor outing—and they’re now on sale for Black Friday with select colors a whopping 40 percent off, now is a great time to pick up a pair.

I first wore the Abisko tights on a trip to Central Oregon, where I took them straight from the box to a six-mile hike that involved steep, rocky trails. I was immediately struck by how comfortable they were. I had some reservations about the middle seam, but it never bothered me. The fabric has just the right amount of stretch (supportive without feeling too tight), and it moves with you in a way that never feels restrictive. Even as I scrambled over rocks at the steepest parts of the hike, I never experienced any pinching or awkward tugging.
I was also impressed with the breathability of these hiking leggings. Central Oregon can be chilly in the morning and surprisingly warm by the afternoon, and the Abisko Tights handled the temperature swings as well as I could have hoped. They’re a bit thicker than typical athleisure leggings (although not fleece-lined), which makes them perfect for moderate climates and cool-weather hiking. I never felt overheated, but I also didn’t feel exposed to wind when I encountered it at the highest point of the trail. That balance between insulation and airflow feels totally dialed in with these Fjallraven pants.
They also have several thoughtful design features that I appreciate more with each wear. The high waistband offers a secure, snug feel that never slips or rides up. They also come with an adjustable interior drawstring that lets you perfect the fit around your waist and adjust it as you move—something that makes a big difference on long hikes. But the two side pockets might be my favorite feature. Instead of small pockets that are difficult to access (something I find on many hiking shorts and leggings), these are plenty big enough for a phone, small wallet, or trail snacks. They’re also placed low and flat to avoid bulk (I forget the pockets are there unless I’m using them) and are easy to get into, thanks to a flap closure instead of a zipper.

I’m not the only person from Travel + Leisure who likes these Fjallraven pants, either. Over the past several years, we’ve tested 84 pairs of women’s hiking leggings on trails all over the world. The Fjallraven Abisko Tights handled our rigorous tests like a champ, and were chosen as one of our favorites—making the final cut with only seven other pairs. We specifically picked these tights for moderate temperatures, although we noted that their versatile fit makes them ideal to wear in a variety of situations, from the gym to running errands.
I can attest to the versatility as well. Since my hiking trip in Oregon, I’ve worn these at least a dozen times in my hometown of Seattle. They’ve become my go-to leggings to wear on long walks with my dog when I want both of us to get a bit of a workout—an easy feat walking up and down the steep hills around the city. I should also mention that my dog is, to put it nicely, a bit of a menace. She has scuffed and ripped more items of clothing than I’d like to admit, but I’m happy to say that her claws haven’t been able to break through these Fjallraven pants. Between hikes and walks, my Abisko tights have been brushed against many sticks, rocks, and branches, and they’re still in pristine condition. Color me impressed!

I can’t talk about any Fjallraven product without mentioning the brand’s sustainability practices. Its mission statement is rooted in the belief that every product they make carries an environmental impact, and that it’s their responsibility to keep that impact as small as possible. Fjallraven prioritizes long-lasting materials and durable construction, and the company works with third-party research institutes to ensure that harmful substances are kept out of its supply chain. The Abisko Tights were specifically made without PFAS and come with the brand’s lifetime repairs policy, which covers manufacturing defects. If a product issue isn’t covered by the warranty, you can still take it to a flagship store for repair services or use free guides offered on the website to help you make small fixes yourself.
I still love my hiking shorts and pants, but the Fjallraven Abisko Tights have become a new favorite in my closet. They’ve convinced me that hiking leggings can be not only comfortable but truly enjoyable to wear. Combine that with their practicality, sustainability, and impressive durability, and I really can’t recommend them enough to lovers of the outdoors.
They are on the pricier side, but I’m convinced these will last me for years to come and are worth the investment. Plus, they’re on sale for Black Friday with select colors as low as $72. But hurry—the sale ends December 1st. Plenty of other Fjallraven products are on sale for Black Friday, from pants to backpacks. Here are some of my favorite picks from the brand, with discounts up to 30 percent off through the holiday weekend.
