Brussels – The European Commission announced this Friday that it will finance a total of 27 Spanish projects under the LIFE program with 44.7 million euros, which represents 12.5% of the 358 million that Brussels will distribute among 132 dossiers across Europe.

The community executive will allocate 16 million euros for Spanish projects related to the transition to clean energy and another 12.6 million for environmental and resource efficiency initiatives, the categories that will receive the most funding.
European funds will be provided for projects such as InBioSoil, which will use fungi and natural microorganisms to decontaminate soils in Spain and Belgium, to treat wastewater and recover nutrients through modular wetlands (smallWAT), separate complex plastics from vehicle and electrical appliance waste (SENSE4LIFE), or improve air quality in ports (LIFE PMFree-Ports).
Also to connect energy communities with local plans (PUBLINK) or to promote a one-stop shop for energy renovation (EFFIC-OSS) and training for those systems (BUILD-OSS), to integrate efficiency services in rental housing (INSPIRE-US) or to promote renewable heating and cooling networks in Tallinn, Barcelona, and Strasbourg (IncentEU).
The Commission will also allocate 4.9 million to Spanish projects related to nature and biodiversity, such as restoring the Ballesteros lagoons and the Mosca River valley (BALLESTEROS) or for the conservation of the threatened fan mussel (PINNACARE), which is on the brink of extinction in the Mediterranean.
The community executive will deliver another 4.8 million euros for climate change adaptation projects, such as strengthening climate resilience in historic areas of Spain and Portugal through digital models of buildings (I-LIBIM), and 4.1 million for mitigation in initiatives such as ultra-fast electric vehicle charging prototypes (FREESVEE) or decarbonizing concrete through mixed structures with wood (TIMBER FOR ALL).
Finally, Brussels agreed to 1.1 million for climate governance to drive the Catalan tourism sector towards climate neutrality (TOUR4CLIMA).
“LIFE projects play a fundamental role in the EU’s transition to a clean, circular, and resilient economy, helping to protect and restore biodiversity, support industrial competitiveness, and contribute to the long-term goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050,” stated the European Commission in a statement.
Beyond Spain, the European executive will deliver community funds from the LIFE Program to initiatives to restore nearly 2,000 hectares of heathland in Sweden to benefit pollinating insects, butterflies, and lizards, restore rivers in Poland and peatlands in Germany, and conserve amphibians in Belgium.
