Swansea were booed off after being thrashed 4-1 by Ipswich with Cameron Burgess scoring two own goals against his former club.
Ipswich dominated with Clarke’s long-range strike giving them a 1-0 half-time lead, before Swansea equalised early in the second half via Franco, but Burgess’ first own goal (from Leif Davis’ deflected shot) restored Ipswich’s advantage.
Then Azon’s close-range header made it 3-1 before Burgess scored a second own goal from Jens Cajuste’s cross, with it meaning Ipswich have now earned 10 points from their last four games, rising to 7th in the Championship.
But for Swansea, they fell to 18th after a fourth loss in seven league matches, with fans booing the team off at half time and full time.
Swansea head coach Alan Sheehan, per BBC Sport:
“I understand the fans’ frustration and the first half was incredibly disappointing. We were nowhere near the level that we have been performance-wise.
“We turned the ball over a lot, we looked a bit anxious, we didn’t come out of duels. We were second best, totally.
“Second half we made a few changes to try to give us more impetus. We scored a really well-worked goal.
“Then we turn the ball over again and concede the next goal, then a set-piece. We hit the post with ours and they score.
“You can’t give up these opportunities to teams like this.
“I know what my job is, I know what I have to do – we have to get wins, there is no two ways about that.
“But I believe I’m the man to take this club forward, of course I do.”
Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, per BBC Sport:
“You enjoy your away wins, they’re a really good connector for the group. You go away from home to tough places like this and you get the win and you have to work hard for it. It’s really good for bringing a new group together.
“It is a result to enjoy and importantly I thought it was a really good performance.
“From the first whistle pretty much to the end I thought there was lots to enjoy about our play.
“On the ball most of our defending was really good, though we are frustrated to concede the goal.
“But I thought it was a really strong performance, a performance to enjoy and of course a really good result.”
Here’s how fans reacted after Swansea were booed off when being thrashed by Ipswich with Burgess scoring two own goals…
@JustReliq: Wanted to be positive, but this was a complete capitulation. Thank you for your incredible work last season and early this season, Alan. Unfortunately, time’s up.
@PembreyView: That was absolutely stinking. Worst performance for a good few years, and that really is saying something. Players have given up on each other. Only 2 or 3 with any desire. None with any quality. Shameful.
@stircrazyjack: we have a top10 squad, this is pitiful, he has to go now!
@cai_rhys: All due respect, questions seriously need to be asked now. £15m invested in the window and we’ve got an abysmally low xG, poor shots on target and shocking defending. And to top it all off, we sit in 18th going into the international break.
@CamWills77: embarrassing, if we had any ambition he’d be gone by 6pm 👍
@DanCroft9: Can anyone defend it? That was woeful, players looking lost, Sheehan looks completely defeated and fans have turned, stop waisting time and make the change
@WillHughes_11: There’s absolutely no excuses now. He simply has to go NOW. If he’s still here after the international break the board also need to be questioned. We are in free fall. All this talk about ambition, let’s show some and show this dinosaur the door. #SheehanOut #Swans
@TheRealTR19: Do the right thing before our season is wasted
@bconnelly55: I know all you Swans are down but that’s what £200 million of transfers gets you. You’re all moaning about £20 million being spent, that doesn’t go a long way in the modern game 🤷
@MDavies08: Time for Sheehan to go. Try to get Carrick if possible. To all the fans gloating that they said this would happen back in April/May aren’t proper fans. He earnt the job, it hasn’t worked. Move on 👍🏻🦢
@Aaronhughes_64: Go on then owners. Show us the ambition and get rid of this donkey. Never rated him. He’s not a manager let’s be real. Wasted our time big time with him
@rhysghughes: If Sheehan survives this, serious questions have to be asked of decision makers. Ambition isn’t what you say on a podcast – it’s shown in actions and choices. Keeping Sheehan is completely unjustifiable. Now, again, for the love of God – CORNER FLAG! @thgorringe
@jhealey07: Get him gone. So far out of his depth and the identity is gone. 20 million spent and were sat in 18th..
@megsscfc: he’s killing this club. I hate watching them lose like this but the players and the fans are frustrated and are nowhere near where they should be. Sheehan is holding us back. get him gone!!
@Dakin_Matty: ‘That 1st half performance was not typical of how we’ve performed’ ????? We’re 0/15 in the 1st half 😂😂 that 1st half was extremely typical. Who his asking these questions man.
@MiltQLlamaIII: “When you have an off-day like today” What? Are you seriously telling us that today was an off day? After the season we’re having so far?
@IanParfitt: He’s being led a lot by questions that are not helping him. On the whole performances have been poor of late so why is the interviewer telling him that today wasn’t a reflection of recent performances. I get that they’re club led interviews but it’s not great!
@swans_talk: Not even going to bother listen to whatever drivel is being served in this. I’m amazed the club has even posted it, read the room! Attendances have been bad enough this season, they’ll drop even more if the correct decision isn’t made.
