Sunderland stun Chelsea with late winner to climb up to 2nd in the Premier League

Sunderland goalscorer Wilson Isidor: “We are lucky we have Nordi Mukiele in the team. He is a machine.

“When we have a long throw into the box we have to be ready. I’m the number nine so I have to be ready in the box. The ball just bounced on me or maybe I was in the right position.

“People think we are a really young team, but we have a lot of character. First of all we are wearing the badge of Sunderland. We always believe.”

Did you know you’re now second in the table? “We’re second?! That’s nice, no? We are not second, it is not the end of the season. We have to keep focusing.

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah to Sky Sports: “Difficult one, they came to disrupt our game. We had a couple of chances in the first half, we created some in the second but switched of at the end. As a team it is not the best of games but it is one we have to learn from.

“With the Champions League we have a lot of games but we can’t complain. These are the games we want to play in and we can’t use that as an excuse.

“Everyone felt that one [in the dressing room]. It is a game we needed to win. We have been very good at Stamford Bridge so it is disappointing.”

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca to Sky Sports: “I think we were not good enough in general. We know that in the moment you drop a little bit you can lose points against any team in the Premier League. It is so difficult. Overall we were not good enough.

“We started well with the goal. Even with that the feeling was we were losing in terms of physicality and second balls. Against this type of team it’s always dangerous.

“It’s always difficult, they bring seven, eight players inside the box. We tried to prepare that but it can happen.

“We were not good enough. When you are not good enough you can drop points against anyone.”

Maresca to BBC Match of the Day: “We started well with the ball but we were losing the second balls and against these sort of teams you have to know how to deal with that and overall we were not good enough.

“It was not one of our best performances. You can drop points against any team if you do not perform at 100%

“I think when you lose a game like today it is not just about one player, we were not good enough in general and it is something we need to learn soon as the Premier League is full of these games.”

On Sunderland’s equaliser: “It was the first time they shot on goal. When they bring 7-8 players inside the box it is very difficult but it is something we need to do better.”

On conceding a late winner: “We said many times that if you can’t win you shouldn’t lose. So we should have managed that better, but it is something to learn.”

“Overall we were not good enough” ❌

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris to Sky Sports: “We built our identity through pre-season and before. The togetherness, the ability to defend and suffer together. We struggled a bit to find the right balance in possession but we were good on the ball, found spaces and tried to press high when possible then in a deep block as in the middle the can punish you

“We did well and I am really proud of the squad and staff, the starters and finishers because the substitutes were important again. We worked hard an played good football.”

On Brian Brobbey: “We suffer against their counter press so we knew Brian has the ability to hold the ball up and help the team to move forward. I am so happy for him, he has struggled sometimes but always showed good mentality and good character.

“We are really young, this is a massive shared experience, almost a new team. I am so happy for the fans.”

Sunderland goalscorer Wilson Isidor to BBC Match of the Day: “We know that coming to play at Stamford Bridge is not easy, even more when you’re one goal down. But this team has a lot of character. I’m not surprised. I’m really happy about the win and I hope we will continue like this.

“My job was to close down Caicedo, we know how he starts the attack every time. They put me in trouble when they had two sixes, I didn’t know who to follow. But they did not continue with this. I’m really happy about it. The model of the game was to stay together, even if we had to suffer. We sufferred and we won so the rewards were there.

“I think this win we dedicate to our fans. They still believed until the end. Last season our slogan was ‘until the end’ and today we showed that.

“We know with Nordi Mukiele he is a machine, he can throw the ball so far. I have to expect every time that the ball will jump to my feet. I was like a fox. That’s how we say. We say renarde in French.

“We don’t want to speak too much. We are just playing our games. We will see where we finish.”

“The togetherness, this ability to defend together, to suffer together” 🤝

Le Bris to BBC Match of the Day: “We try out best to design a game plan for this game. I think it worked well even if we conceded an early goal. High press, they have this ability to exploit space with their players going one v one. Their players have many offensive threats so they scored early. With the ball we were alright I think. Without the ball it was tough but it got a bit better, second half was really good. It didn’t feel like it was possible for them to score. We felt the momentum shift a bit and it was possible to score.

“The emotions in the club so far are excellent. It’s impressive. We’ve found this togetherness not only across the squad but also across the club with the fans as well. When the energy is like that you can create many positives, like this win today.

“I think we struggled a bit out of position because it was absolutely obvious. With the ball I’m really happy because we showed good qualities. For the defensive block we struggled a bit to find the right position and it was critical so after 15 minutes were done and we have this connection to build something a little bit different.

“Today against this squad, Chelsea have so many threats, it was really important to be clinical. It’s a positive lesson because we won in the end.”

On Sunderland being second in the table: “It’s good for them, [the fans] positive vibes. I think they deserve this. For us the target always remains the same. We want to reach this target of 40 points more or less as soon as possible.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Sunderland stun Chelsea with a late winner to climb up to 2nd in the Premier League…

@UtdMicah: Deserve it, been very fun to watch all season. That’s yous staying up now without a doubt, been wishing you well since how you treated Amad. Enjoy it. 👍

@LimbsSunderland: Build every single one of them a statue

@LeeMck9: But but but what about our easy start!! All the Burnley and Leeds fans told us to wait til we play someone decent. Do Chelsea count lads? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@dazvickerson: Who knew Chelsea were part of our easy start. Proper away performance 🔴⚪️ #SAFC

@g_tosh: hate to say it, but Sunderland on fire! beat one of the big boys away 👏 Good old Bruno to get us 3points, need to start a good league run now #nufc #safc

@Safcmbell: I genuinely can’t believe what’s just happened. My dog has moved out because I screamed at the telly. Nearly 40 year old and this is the greatest period of my life supporting Sunderland #safc

@Philip_RJ89: This is as wholehearted, talented, committed, resilient and likeable a Sunderland team as I’ve seen in thirty years of fandom. They’re brilliantly coached, captained inspirationally and they’re doing us proud on a weekly basis. High standards and high levels of fitness. #SAFC

@NarmiCFC: Sunderland were very very good today. I’ve watched them all season and this doesn’t surprise me. This is a top half team. Incredible recruitment across Europe. Their manager isn’t the most glamorous and doesn’t play glamorous footy but he’s an exceptional tactician. #SAFC #SUN

@JoshWilsonn_: Absolutely fucking unbelievable, Brobbey and Talbi, I am MOVED. What a team, 2nd in the league ❤️ #SAFC

@mickroper81:
17 points from 9 games
2nd in the Prem.
Beat the World Club Champs away.
But let’s be honest… we’ve played no one yet and had easiest start to the season.
This team have the makings of something special #safc

@arabmackem: Not so long ago Sunderland were owned by a couple of Spivs, intent on taking from the club. They are now owned by a young French lad who had a plan, that’s worked. The same lad also got criticised for not getting Will Still and took his time to get RLB. Thank god for KLD! #SAFC

@Ian_Crow3: OH MY GOD, TIL THE END ONCE AGAIN!!! Strong 1st half, attacking and deflecting, then resolute 2nd half, with sub Brobbey holding it up superbly for Talbi, who finishes, unreal. A perfect away performance at SB, defending like monsters and clinical. 17pts HAWAY THE LADS!!! #SAFC

@MiserableMackem: Speechless. Absolutely dumbfounded. Chelsea were far from good today but fuck me for us to win!? Sublime. Bizarre. Fucking brilliant. But we haven’t played anyone of note? Hahahahahaha #SAFC

@Chipper_SC: This club man. Many games to go yet but #SAFC have been absolutely mint so far. The fans were class as well. Could hear the #RAWA all the way from the States. 🔴⚪️

“They haven’t played a proper team yet” – does beating the World Champions in their own backyard count? HA WAY THE LADS, one very, very proud Sunderland supporter. 🔴⚪️❤️#SAFC pic.twitter.com/qN6GzMPNyJ
