Matias Soulé confirms he has already turned down Italy before and would do so again, because ‘my objective is to play for Argentina.’

The 22-year-old has dual citizenship due to some Italian heritage, and has been in the Peninsula since 2020 for Juventus, Frosinone and now Roma.

His agent caused a firestorm when quoted in an interview saying that Soulé was ready to consider a switch of allegiance to the Azzurri unless he received an opportunity soon for Argentina.

However, the player is at pains to clarify that is not in his thoughts for the present or future.

“I told Luciano Spalletti two years ago that I wanted to play for Argentina, and that remains my thought now,” Soulé told Il Messaggero newspaper.

“My agent was angry, he said that he was misinterpreted. Nothing has changed from two years ago, nobody has called me, and my idea on the matter remains the same, which is playing for Argentina.

“I thank Italy very much, but I want to continue working to earn a call-up from Lionel Scaloni. I understand it is not easy, because there are so many great players available, but this is my objective.”

The forward has represented Argentina at various youth levels, including Under-23, but is still waiting for his senior debut.

Argentina coach Scaloni has already hinted that he is keeping an eye on the player and intends to give him a chance.

He scored three goals and provided two assists in six Serie A appearances for Roma so far this season, helping them reach the top of the table alongside Napoli.
