Brussels – Sweden is being taken to the EU court for failing to meet requirements for reduced ammonia emissions.
“The Commission believes that the authorities’ efforts so far have been insufficient,” it says in a press release on Friday.
Bulgaria and Portugal are also being taken to court for ammonia emissions, while Latvia finds itself in the same situation due to emissions of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds excluding methane (NMVOC).
The process is initiated after a correspondence between the Commission and the countries that has been ongoing since 2023. In the first phase, fourteen countries were required to respond, then nine, before now choosing to proceed against the four mentioned above.
