Scenes as Charlton’s 96th minute winner puts more pressure on West Brom’s Ryan Mason

West Brom head coach Ryan Mason told BBC Radio WM:

“It’s a disappointing result and it’s not good enough. I could speak all day long about the performance and positives, the moments we created, the chances we should have taken but I don’t think at the moment anyone wants to hear that.

“We have lost another game. The disappointment is there and it is frustrating. It is my responsibility and at the moment I am not giving enough to the players to change that and I need to do it.

“The one thing I will say is they are giving me everything and they are putting everything into it but it’s not enough at the moment. It’s another one that we shouldn’t have lost but have done and the feeling inside the dressing room is there is a lot of anger.

“I’m fine. It’s football and I know what it takes. I am in this position and I can handle it but for whatever reason at the moment the results aren’t good and it is my responsibility to fix.”

Mason, per Sky Sports:

“It’s a painful way to lose a game. I can speak so much about the performance and the chances we created, but the reality is we’ve lost the game and we’ve lost too many games of football at this time.

“The responsibility is mine – absolutely. I can see and feel the players are giving everything. They are committed, so I certainly can’t question that. It is down to me to change the situation we’re in and get more out of them – give them more.

“We came here to win and we could have with the moments we created. Did we play a good match? Yeah – but we lost.

“When you lose games it is the coach’s responsibility. At the moment it is not good enough. I need to find a way to change it.”

Charlton manager Nathan Jones told BBC Radio London:

“It is wonderful and you have to enjoy those moments. I said to Sonny [Carey] at the end go and enjoy it as you don’t often get 17 or 20,000 people singing your name.

“It was a wonderful, wonderful night but thoroughly deserved as well. I thought we had real control, I thought we finished strong and [brought on] the subs at the right time.

“The subs came on and gave us a massive impetus late on and it would have been a travesty if we didn’t win it and definitely if they had nicked something at the end.”

Jones, per Sky Sports:

“We were excellent tonight, apart from the odd counter attack against us. We should score the penalty and be 1-0 up. Then their keeper made a world-class save from Sonny Carey. You will not see a better save than that for a long, long time.

“I said to Sonny at the end of the game to go and enjoy it. You don’t often get 17,000 or 20,000, however many were here, singing your name.

“Every pass and touch he has is forward. Whatever run he makes is forward. Every shot zings or tests something. He has been an absolute revelation and it’s why we’ve brought him to the football club.

“It was thoroughly deserved. The subs gave us a massive impetus late on. It would have been a travesty if we didn’t win it or they had nicked something.

“We’re in a good place. The players are giving me everything. It was a wonderful night.”

‘This feels like home.’ ❤️

Here’s how fans reacted to absolute scenes as Charlton’s 96th minute winner puts more pressure on West Brom’s Ryan Mason…

@WBAReport: Way out of his depth. Shilen will know what to do now… 👋

@maxgwebb: Everyone commenting mason out needs to not be so negative, it’s not like he can just run on to the pitch and score for us, it’s not always his fault?

@kyle07__: Heartbreaking that our club is rotten. I’ve never felt more disconnected from the club than I have this season. If Mason doesn’t go soon, the fans will vote with their feet

@WBA_Price26: First time I think i genuinely laughed seeing us concede, its laughable these performances

@AlCAFC1905: Come for a point against a newly promoted side. Shame on WBA.

@StaceJT3: Never been so out of love with this team. No style. No heart. No desire. No positive play. No creativity. No words really. It’s a worrying time!

@jonnywhite909: Bizarre team selection, even more bizarre substitutions. He has to go, totally out of his depth.

@ESkelding: Unfortunately he is out of his depth at this level and I think he knows it, a real shame but not all coaches can transfer to the top position, he’s young so can obviously bounce back and keep learning, good luck to him

@Turkishcypriot8: Superb win for #cafc last night. It seems like every team we play has triple / quadruple our playing budget. What Nathan does really well is he knows our limitations and tactically plays to our strengths. We’ve had an unbelievable start, and he deserves a lot of the plaudits.

@sempertefallant: Plenty of calls for RM’ s head after recent results. I would stick with him for now unless relegation is a real threat (unlikely). If he can’t turn it round he will deserve to go but I’d give him more time with this unbalanced, uninspiring squad to show he’s up to the job. #wba

@Suzysue8: What a night, so proud of the boys tonight, another tough game. Shows they never give up, keep battling till the end. Loved it and I love @SonnyCarey_10 more! ❤️⚽️ #cafc

@owencafc1417: This is unreal from us so far. The never say die attitude from us and the commitment is unbelievable this team just do not know when they’re beaten. The aim was just to stay up this season and we are fucking smashing it right now. The togetherness is amazing #cafc

@SELKXIFC: The best way to win a game. Neither team was particularly good tonight. Missed pen aside there were very few chances. Carey is the only positive player in our midfield and Fullah was excellent. WBA GK will be gutted with the goal! Who cares. 🌲points. On to Wrexham we go #cafc

@MitpriPrice: What are we expecting this season? I get that the football we are seeing is poor but to be honest I was expecting this season about 10th! I think there are to many teams ahead of us! Just me being honest. I think some people are expect us to get promoted! #wba

Fantastic full-time scenes 🍿
