PSG emerged victorious in an eight-goal Champions League thriller with Tottenham, who have conceded nine goals in their last two games.
Vitinha scored his first senior hat-trick as Paris Saint-Germain piled more misery on Tottenham with a 5-3 win at the Parc des Princes.
PSG stunningly fell behind to a Tottenham side beaten 4-1 by Arsenal last Sunday, Richarlison giving Thomas Frank’s side a 35th-minute lead, but a spirited effort from the visitors ultimately fell short.
Frank’s set-up against Arsenal came under significant scrutiny and, while his side displayed battling qualities in the French capital, there will be plenty of questions asked of his team’s defence following a frenetic and thrilling encounter.
Vitinha levelled on the stroke of half-time with a sublime individual effort and then repeated the trick after Randal Kolo Muani, on loan from PSG, restored Tottenham’s lead.
Tottenham were architects of their own downfall as Fabian Ruiz put PSG in front and Willian Pacho made it 4-2, before Kolo Muani scored against his parent club for a second time to keep the game in the balance.
Vitinha’s third from the penalty spot proved the decisive blow in a game that PSG ended with 10 men after Lucas Hernandez saw red for elbowing Xavi Simons, dealing Tottenham their first Champions League defeat of the season. PSG are second in the league phase standings with 12 points, four points better off than Spurs.
Tottenham come out fighting
A trip to the Parc des Princes looked like being an extremely daunting one for Tottenham in the wake of their North London derby humbling, and those who criticised Frank’s team approach for the game appeared to do so again, with the Dane seemingly going with a similarly defensive team.
Yet Spurs were more aggressive than anticipated and, after predominantly restricting PSG to long-range efforts, the visitors went ahead as Kolo Muani nodded back across for Richarlison bundle home following excellent build-up play from Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray.
Tottenham, though, could not keep the hosts at bay before half-time, though it took a sublime effort from Vitinha to restore parity.
The Portugal midfielder crashed a rasping strike from the edge of the area in off the bar and at that point a PSG turnaround appeared inevitable.
PSG eventually take command
But it did not come without a twist, which was delivered by Kolo Muani, whose volley was diverted in by the head of Marquinhos after Gray had seen his initial effort cleared off the line.
Tottenham’s lead was again brief, however, as Vitinha cleverly worked the ball onto his left foot and found the bottom corner from just inside the box with an unerring strike from just inside the box.
Six minutes later PSG did complete the turnaround, with Tottenham giving them a helping hand as Crisitan Romero’s pass to Pape Sarr was intercepted, allowing Joao Neves to tee up Ruiz to lash the defending champions ahead.
Willian Pacho then looked to have put the game beyond doubt when he found the bottom-right corner after Tottenham failed to clear a corner, but sloppy play in possession from PSG enabled Kolo Muani to again give Frank’s men hope as he displayed superb composure to fire low beyond Lucas Chevalier.
That hope was finally extinguished by Vitinha 14 minutes from time, his hat-trick completed with a confident penalty after Romero handled in the area.
