Feld am See, Austria
I had a bye today (and next play Heike, whom I just played on Saturday), but Vicki and I practiced for around an hour early in the morning. (She had a match today and won 60 60).
After hitting and chatting with Vicki, I biked back to my hotel, did some usual exercises etc, then rode back to the courts for lunch. The lunch was interesting. It was a buffet, one of various salads…lettuce and other vegetables, pickled cabbage, beets, etc, soup, and lots of desserts, in particular Kaiserschmarm, sort of a cross between bread pudding and pancakes…it’s made of fluffy pancakes shredded with forks, and then served with fruit compote…apple or plums. The pancakes may have fruit in them as well. Apparently it’s a common lunch or dessert. I had salad and soup…but the pancakes looked pretty tasty!
I then went to the next town over for some berries and drinks…and dark chocolate. I found those and then decided to continue down the road to the Millstatter See, the second largest lake (and biggest by water volume, since it’s quite deep). There’s a bike trail along the lake but I just parked (and had to figure out how to pay using a QR code…the tricky part was the the app when translated to English said to NOT put in spaces between the letters…but in reality one has to put in the spaces for the app to work). Eventually I figured it out and was on my merry way. First I went to the “Strandbad Millstatt” which is basically water access with platforms or jumping into the water or sunbathing. It was very quiet and I was able to walk in without having to pay. The lake is surrounded by steep mountains, sort of like a fjord, and so is quite beautiful, being long and narrow.
I walked further down the lake till the end of the city of Millstatt am See. There are a number of seafront hotels with beautiful gardens and beach access which looked like great places for a relaxing vacation, and there were tons of bikers on the path.
Tomorrow I suppose I will play my first match and the doubles draws will probably be posted tonight or tomorrow morning. Times for singles tomorrow are posted at 8pm the night before matches, and doubles times are posted at 9am the day of play.
