Elaine Wong
Orrick has strengthened the firm’s Asia practice with the addition of the first dispute resolution and international arbitration partner Elaine Wong to its Singapore office, complementing the expanding energy and infrastructure team on the ground.
Mark Beeley, the London-based head of Orrick’s global international arbitration practice, told Asia Business Law Journal that Singapore has been a frequent venue for disputes handled by the firm’s global arbitration team.
“With the fast growth of our energy and infrastructure transactional work in Singapore (we have now recruited six partners plus our Tokyo based team), we are experiencing increasing client demand for Southeast Asia disputes support, including first chair capabilities on the ground in our Singapore office,” said Beeley.
He added that Wong would collaborate closely with the firm’s 50-practitioner global arbitration team, and the dispute resolution work of her Tokyo-based colleagues.
Wong, a Singaporean national admitted in Singapore as well as England and Wales, previously practised as a partner at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, where she had worked at both the firm’s Tokyo and Singapore offices during her more than 14-year career with the firm.
Wong specialises in advising multinational companies on energy and infrastructure, finance, life sciences and technology in international arbitrations and cross-border disputes involving Singapore, Japan and the Southeast Asia region.
“We are very excited to be welcoming Elaine as part of our team, not least because her experience in Tokyo fits with the flow of work between our Southeast Asia offices as Japan-based investors lead financing across the region,” said Beeley.
Launched in 2021, Orrick’s Singapore office now has seven partners, six of whom focus on project finance for the energy and infrastructure sector. Besides Tokyo and Singapore, the firm also operates in Beijing.
