Oriol Romeu poised for Southampton return

According to Sport, Oriol Romeu has secured his next move after leaving Barcelona, returning to England to join Southampton.

The 34-year-old midfielder, who terminated his contract with the Catalans at the end of the summer transfer window, will sign a short-term deal until the end of the season, with an option for an additional year.

Romeu, a club legend at Southampton after seven successful seasons there, is expected to help the team fight against relegation in the Championship. He will travel to England shortly for a medical and to finalize the agreement.

After his departure from Barcelona—where he was initially signed by Xavi Hernández to replace Sergio Busquets—Romeu trained alone while waiting for a suitable opportunity. Despite offers from MLS and Asian clubs, he prioritized staying in Europe and chose Southampton for its familiarity and competitive project.

His return to St. Mary’s comes after a challenging spell at Barça, where new coach Hansi Flick made it clear he would not feature in his plans, favoring younger, more creative players in the middle of the park.

Romeu’s experience and leadership could prove vital as Southampton aim to climb out of the danger zone in the English Championship.
