Norwich fans protest outside of stadium after defeat extends winless run to 11 games

Norwich City fans decided to protest outside of Carrow Road stadium again after defeat extends winless run to 11 games.

On the 62nd minute, Mathias Kvistgaarden had put the Canaries ahead, capitalising on Leicester’s defensive error with a composed finish after his initial shot was blocked.

Just over 10 minutes later, substitute Bobby De Cordova-Reid levelled the scoreline for Leicester with a half-volley.

Then in the 92nd minute, Jordan James headed in the winner from Abdul Fatawu’s cross in stoppage time, to give Leicester their first victory in six games (second in 11 since August), easing pressure on manager Marti Cifuentes.

Norwich, who have since confirmed the sacking of Manning, suffer an eighth straight home defeat, extending their winless Championship run to 11 matches, leaving them second-bottom.

Marc Webber (BBC Final Score commentator), said: “Liam Manning walked down the tunnel on his own after trying to clap his own fans.

“He was roundly booed by those Norwich City fans that remained. The chants of (sporting director Ben) ‘Knapper Out’ followed.”

He also tweeted: “Norwich City fans have gathered at the player entrance of Carrow Road to protest, chanting “sack the board”, “Knapper Out” and chants about Liam Manning and Zoe Webber.”

Victories for Leicester sees them looking up from mid-table and not over their shoulder while at the foot of the table Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich both lost, Sheffield United played out a statemate with QPR to leapfrog the Canaries, and Oxford and Portsmouth also go into the international break off the back losing games they were winning.

Before Manning came, I was very much against him and said that English people are not good managers and I still say the same now and the Norwich fans called me a racist and now they sing the song Manning Manning your football is shit.

Enough is enough, sack him.❌👊🏻#ncfc pic.twitter.com/E4SkCxeKVd

Norwich City boss Liam Manning told BBC Radio Norfolk:

“We were okay without, for me, testing their keeper enough, which has been a consistent thing around quality in attacking areas.

“When you look at the plan, the way we pressed, the way we got after them, the way we played forward and the way we were a bit more direct in what we did was good.

“But in the last 15-20 minutes we can’t sustain the level of intensity that you need to and, unfortunately the challenge is to be able to have real impact off the bench to sustain the levels when we have the volume of injuries we have got.

(On fans’ protests): “My whole thing is not to put on a sales pitch, my whole thing is to thank the fans today. I thought they were outstanding to the final whistle.

“In a tough moment and where we are at, I thought they showed what they are about today and really stuck with the group, which is the most important thing.

“And going forward that’s exactly what the lads will need.”

🔰🗣️ “Who knows? We’ll see. If you could give me a little bit of respect and some headspace to reflect, that’d be good.”

Leicester City manager Marti Cifuentes told BBC Radio Leicester:

“It was very important for the whole group because it has not been easy days or easy weeks. The guys showed character, and we finished the game as the better team.

“The way we finished the last game (a late draw with Middlesbrough in midweek) had a big impact mentally, so to be able to respond from a mental point of view was extremely strong.

“From day one I’ve said it doesn’t matter how much quality you have got, you need to be together, need to show commitment and this attitude because it is not the easiest league in the world.

“I think the guys are getting there. Cultural changes are the ones that time more time, so we are trying to get there. It will be up and down, for sure, but now we can reflect on what we have done well over the last couple of games and we need to keep working in this way and analyse what we can improve on.”

Norwich City can confirm that the club have parted company with head coach Liam Manning.

Assistant head coach Chris Hogg and first-team coach analyst James Krause have also left the club.

NORWICH STATEMENT:

Norwich City can confirm that the club have parted company with head coach Liam Manning.

Assistant head coach Chris Hogg and first-team coach analyst James Krause have also left the club.

Sporting director Ben Knapper said: “We have tried absolutely everything possible to work through this incredibly challenging period but, unfortunately, given the recent run of results and performances, we have been left with no choice other than to make a change at this stage.

“Liam and his staff worked tirelessly to move our football club forward. They are all fundamentally good people and we wish them the very best in whatever comes next.

“We very much understand the frustration and criticism from our supporters at this stage. So far, results and performances on the pitch haven’t been good enough. We accept that responsibility, but it’s now imperative that we start to repair the relationship with our supporters and do everything we can to give them something to get behind.”

First-team coach Ryan Garry, supported by goalkeeper coach Tony Roberts and set piece coach Nick Stanley, will take charge of the first team on an interim basis, as the club works to appoint a new head coach.

Norwich released a statement a few days ago, saying: “Ahead of this weekend’s Sky Bet Championship fixture against Leicester City at Carrow Road, the club would like to remind supporters that it will not tolerate abusive behaviour towards its players, their families and staff, or behaviour that has a detrimental impact on other supporters.

“Following our most recent home fixture against Hull City, a small number of supporters directed personal abuse towards several of our players and their families.

“All at the football club understand the frustration felt from supporters during this period. Supporters have every right to show their emotions towards the club, be that love and support, or anger and frustration, but please do it in the right way.

“As a reminder, it is a criminal offence to throw objects onto the field of play. Anyone found to have done so will be removed from the stadium and reported to the police, as well as being referred to the club’s Sanction Panel, where a ban may be imposed.”

Here’s how Twitter users reacted as Norwich fans protest outside of stadium after defeat extends their winless run to 11 games…

@MH_HCAFC: Not even a bad side Norwich, you just need to work on passing, shooting, attacking, defending, goalkeeping, creating chances, dribbling, positioning and game management

@PaulPt88: Almost as soon as Leicester equalised, Manning takes off an attacker (Schwartau), and despite having other attacking options on the bench, he brings on a defender (McConville), in what I can only call an act of wanton cowardice – he deserves to go for that alone.

@PhilBygrave1970: The worst home start to a season record, ever, the worst win percentage, ever. If there’s any respect to the club and fans left, Manning and above must go now, surely. Enough is enough. We are a laughing stock 🤔🙈😤🤯💩💚💛🤞

@Az__07: Fans excellent today. Fully backing the team only for Manning to fuck it up with stupid substitutions and tactical changes before then cowardly scurrying off down the tunnel at full time. Get him gone now. #NCFC

@_CarlMann: This has to change, for club and for Manning. He’s failing his job tragically, and should be relieved. Human level, this is toxic for him and players and the club needs to step in to protect him from that, do the right thing, and support him beyond. But, it’s untenable. #ncfc

@cw_ncfc: The most frustrating thing today was people sitting near me chanting Knapper out when we’re 1-0 up, leave that until the end of the game, just get behind the lads, they need us more than ever at the minute! #ncfc

@tompauley8: Liam Manning might be one of the most unlikable, uncharismatic people we’ve ever had at Norwich. Acts like some middle manager nobody that throws everyone under the bus and talks like he’s put key phrases into chatGPT. Sick of seeing him, sick of hearing from him #ncfc

@rontheballcity: Actually think Manning needs to show some class and dignity now, and not least respect to the fans, and walk – fuck the payoff, if that’s what he’s waiting for – just go. This is long past not working #ncfc

@Paulthehammer79: @NorwichCityFC how have you not sacked him yet. Should have gone 10 games ago. Utter utter incompetence from @MikeAttanasio and the entire board. Might be a great businessman and baseball GM but knows fuck all about football. Sleep walking to league one #ncfc

@Ginger_Canary: Manning looked & sounded like a broken man on Canary Call, who’s just waiting for his boss to pull the trigger. But he won’t resign cause he’ll lose his payout & Knapper is too busy living in La La Land to do it. Attanasio needs to get the wool off his eyes and do something #ncfc

@jonrogerswriter:
Issue is…
Say Manning goes.
You want Knapper choosing again?
So Manning AND Knapper goes.
You want Webber running the show?
So Manning, Knapper AND Webber goes.
The bloke who calls it a “jersey” is choosing the next step.
Basically #NCFC are fucked.

Lots been said about Norwich fans in recent weeks.

However, given the circumstances, not many fan bases would turn out in their numbers like this and cheer their team for almost the entire game.

They are the greatest asset our club has. 🙌 pic.twitter.com/H2cQvqxepP
