Norwich denied first home win of season after Oxford score 95th minute equaliser

Norwich City were denied their first home win of the season after Oxford United score a 95th minute equaliser.

The Canaries had taken the lead 29 minutes in thanks to Jovon Makama, who struck the ball high into the net. and victory would have took them within two points of Oxford in 21st.

But it was absolute heartbreak for the hosts right at the end, Oxford worked the ball well down the right, pulling back for Filip Krastev who slotted it into the bottom corner from the centre of the box.

While the draw ended Norwich’s record run of seven straight home league defeats, it kept them second-bottom in the Championship, five points behind 21st-placed Oxford.

94th minute of the game, you’re hanging on for a vital win and an opposition player is allowed a completely free shot 12 yards out, horrific defending #ncfc

Norwich City boss Philippe Clement told BBC Radio Norfolk:

“It’s mixed feelings. Of course, very disappointed for the fans, for the players.

“We deserved to win today, I think it’s clear for everybody at the game. On the other side, it’s positive what they’ve shown after just seven days together.

“You see a team who wants to fight, who wants to work, who wants to go for it.

“We created chances to get two or three goals and then the game is finished. But we didn’t score them so that’s a work in progress for the future.

“I know there is still a lot of work to be done. The team knows too, but you see everybody is working hard.”

This is brutal 😬

Clement, per Sky Sports:

“There was a big improvement from Saturday (when they lost 4-1 at Birmingham). There was a better structure to the team, better chance creation and the fans saw a team who deserved to win the game.

“There are still a lot of things that need to be better but I think a week ago everyone would have settled for this performance, although obviously not the result.

“The team played some good football in spells and created plenty of chances – but we were unable to get the second goal to kill off the game.

“There is a lot to work with here and a lot of players are not available because of injury and some that are not at the level I want them to be.

“It will take time – certainly a lot longer than a week – but I already feel really good here.”

Oxford United head coach Gary Rowett told BBC Radio Oxford:

“The first 30 minutes, I would say it was as controlled and as composed a performance as we have had for a long time.

“I have been coming here for a long, long time in the Championship and I can’t remember a time where actually, we were in their half and felt so comfortable.

“Really disappointed to concede the goal. I felt like it was unfair for us to come in at half-time 1-0 down.

“There were a couple of moments [where] they could have [taken] the game away from us. Then we keep going.

“It is such a competitive group. They won’t lay down and accept these games. I am just really pleased with the character.”

Rowett, per Sky Sports:

“On the balance of play, I am more than happy with a point. When a side is 1-0 up and doesn’t put their opponents away they are always open to something like that happening at the end.

“I actually thought we were excellent for the first 30 minutes and when they scored it was a bit harsh on us.

“But they then had a 20-minute spell when they put us under a lot of pressure and we needed some good defending, good blocks and some wastefulness on their part.

“We stayed in it and were able to make an attacking quadruple substitution which eventually led to us getting our goal.

“This is an honest team, a good group of lads, who always keep going to the end.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Norwich were denied their first home win of season after Oxford score a 95th minute equaliser…

@Oxford_carper: How on earth did you not beat us…. ?!

@IKFalconer: Only a week into Clement and a lot of positives to take from tonight. Much more energy, movement and creativity. Gutted with the late equaliser, but that’s always a risk when chances haven’t been taken.

@Norwichlad1: We are so down. There’s no way this team picks up another 40 points.

@FPLJessx: A very normal feeling in a slightly different fashion. This team couldn’t fight its way out of a wet paper bag.

@Samba12Fc: How we haven’t won that I’ll never know, all them chances. League one bound

@daniel_tortoise: Will people finally, finally accept that this squad is absolute garbage and no manager could salvage anything with it? Manning was terrible, but it’s clear now he was given absolutely nothing to work with and was doomed from the start. And the same applies to Clement.

@AdamFirrell: Wonderful point at home against the mighty Oxford United. Well done lads 👏🏽 👏🏽

@shayoufc29: Pathetic performance was lucky to get a point. Serious words need to be had about that staring 11. Rowett out #oufc

@IsaacOUFC: I don’t care we got a last minute equaliser, Rowett got it so so so wrong tonight and cost us 2 points, I cannot get my head around the starting eleven. We are just drawing our way to relegation. Get him out.

@TownsendJon80: Performance was woeful, lucky to get a point, first time this season I fear relegation unless something drastically improves!, can’t see how though, normally I’m positive but not this time! #oufc

@realpaulhawtin: Absolutely stolen a point there. Strange starting line up, awful performance away again but somehow a point on the board. #coyy

Scared of giving my opinion of what we saw in the Barclay given how people said I lied about Wright a month ago. When Jurasek didn’t chase a poor clearance down that went nowhere near him, Clement looked livid at his coaching team. He was subbed moments later. #ncfc pic.twitter.com/HVbQENQjGU
