The NFL’s executive vice president of football operations, Troy Vincent, listed Philadelphia Eagles tackle Lane Johnson and Washington Commanders tackle Laremy Tunsil among the early contenders for the league’s first-ever Protector of the Year award.
He also highlighted Denver Broncos tackle Garrett Bolles, Kansas City Chiefs tackle Josh Simmons, Chicago Bears guard Joe Thuney, Los Angeles Rams guard Justin Dedich, Chiefs center Creed Humphrey, Cleveland Browns center Ethan Pocic and Atlanta Falcons center Ryan Neuzil.
The NFL announced the creation of the award in May, with offensive linemen generally not recognized by any other major award.
“This award means everything to the big guys up front,” former NFL offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth said in a statement at the time. “The Protector of the Year isn’t just about stats—it’s about the mindset, grit, and leadership it takes to be the foundation of a football team. It’s time the men who lead, protect, and never ask for credit are recognized as the backbone of this game.”
