The Miami Dolphins are facing even more turmoil after another disappointing performance on Sunday.
The Dolphins fell to 1-6 this season after suffering a 31-6 loss against a Cleveland Browns team that was starting rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who threw for just 116 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions on 13-of-18 passing in the game. Despite his modest numbers, he still outplayed Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was 12-of-23 for 100 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. He was eventually replaced by rookie backup Quinn Ewers, who threw for 53 yards on 5-of-8 passing in his NFL debut.
Tagovailoa looked out of sorts throughout the game as he also fumbled the ball three times, though they were all recovered by the Dolphins. His miscues allowed the Browns to ride rookie running back Quinshon Judkins’ three-touchdown performance to their second win of the year.
The poor play by Tagovailoa further ignited fans on social media who are calling for his benching and head coach Mike McDaniel’s firing. Some fans went as far as declaring that the Dolphins need to trade for Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who has yet to see the field this season despite Gabriel’s subpar play.
The Browns have maintained patience with their development of Sanders, but he could be a strong trade chip if they choose to commit to Gabriel as their franchise quarterback. Teams like the Dolphins could surely use an influx of new energy, so it will be interesting to see if anyone seriously pursues Sanders ahead of the Nov. 4 trade deadline.
Tagovailoa’s continued struggles could lead to major changes in Miami, as McDaniel remains on the hot seat after another loss. The Dolphins will try to end their three-game skid when they visit the Atlanta Falcons in Week 8.
