“We could have gone out to eat and seen this guy across the table from us,” said Ryan Murphy, the son of the victim. “That’s wild to think about.”
Back on July 28, 64-year-old Robert Murphy was beaten to death. That same day, police arrested 40-year-old William Bordsen for first-degree murder, but a judge gave him a $400,000 bond and he was able to make it. He walked out in three days.
“It makes me sick,” Ryan Murphy said. “That is coming from a person that is clearly unfit for society.”
But on Friday, another judge reversed that decision based on new evidence.
Murphy and Bordsen were roommates and lived in a home off Coronado Drive in east Charlotte. The initial story given to prosecutors was that Murphy was drunk and started a fight and that Bordsen had to defend himself. In court, prosecutors said that was not true, that toxicology reports prove that Murphy was not drunk. Furthermore, cellphone video allegedly taken by Bordsen show him taunting the victim after he died or while he was dying.
“To where he’s making noises on the ground and this guy pulls out his phone, takes video of my father. It’s the sickest thing I ever heard in my life,” Ryan Murphy said.
The family is thankful that prosecutors pushed the court to revoke the bond. They believe all the scrutiny brought to the criminal justice system by the Iryna Zarutska case may have helped.
“I think that being brought to light, some scrutiny being placed on Charlotte, definitely pressured the system into making the right decision this time,” said Ryan Murphy. “We’re doing a lot better now that he’s locked up. I don’t think you realize how much something is affecting you until a change is made.”
Although the Murphy family believes that a wrong has been righted, justice for them is a conviction that will keep Bordsen locked up and never let out.
