Having led the Misano Sprint, six-time MotoGP champion Marc Márquez crashed out of the lead on Lap 6 of the 13-lap race, making his first mistake on a Saturday this season.
Marc Márquez started from the fourth place on the starting grid, but had a great launch off the line to end the opening lap in second spot behind pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi.
The Spaniard then took the lead on Lap 6, and was eager to build up a small margin between himself and the Aprilia rider. However, going just fractionally wide at Misano 1, he lost the front of his Desmosedici at ‘Misano 1′, crashing out of the lead.
The incident marked his first mistake in a sprint race this season, prompting him to say: “It was my first Sprint mistake of the season. I was riding well, but I ended up slightly wide at turn 15 and then crossed a little more: the front tucked and I couldn’t save it.
“Tomorrow we’ll try to keep the same level, and we aim for a good performance. The race will be a long one and there won’t be any drop with the medium tyre, so we can be fast throughout the encounter.
“I expect Marco (Bezzecchi) to be very competitive. We’ll continue with the same approach as always, as it has worked well for us until now,” concluded the six-time MotoGP champion.
His team-mate Francesco Bagnaia put in an encouraging performance in qualifying to secure eighth on the starting grid, but the home favourite gradually lost ground and finished thirteenth.
“There’s obviously some disappointment and frustration. The pace was good this morning, but things in the Sprint didn’t go as we’d hoped. We have a lot of work to do in analysing the race data to understand the reason behind this step back, because it’s clear that something went wrong.
“We need to stay focused and work hard to make amends tomorrow, trying to bring home the best possible result. It won’t be easy, but we’ll do our best as always,” the two-time MotoGP champion concluded.
