Inter Milan 2-0 Lazio: What Were The Main Talking Points As The Nerazzurri Skyrocket Their Way To The Top Of The Serie A Table?

Putting in another dominant domestic performance on Sunday night, Inter Milan skyrocketed their way back to the top of the Serie A standings thanks to a 2-0 victory against Lazio.

Taking just three minutes to set the San Siro alight, skipper Lautaro Martinez recorded a third top-flight goal of the season and handed Cristian Chivu’s men a dream start.

Dominating large spells, the 20-time Serie A champions added a second just after the hour mark as French youngster Ange-Yoan Bonny tapped in from close range after he got on the end of a low cross from Federico Dimarco.

Now winning all of their previous four consecutive appearances across all competitions, Inter are enjoying what has become an extended flurry.

As for Lazio, continuing to show some glaring inconsistencies this season, the Eagles have put just four Serie A victories on the board and they enter November’s international break on another downbeat note.

On a night when Inter laid down another title marker, we have taken a look at the key talking points from the San Siro.

Inter skyrocket their way back to top spot

While Inter Milan might have fallen to a 3-1 loss against defending champions Napoli on October 25th, the Nerazzurri have certainly proven that downbeat display in Naples was nothing more than a minor blip.

Collecting a heavyweight domestic scalp here, Sunday’s hosts have now won all of their previous four appearances across all competitions by an aggregate score of 9-2.

Skyrocketing their way back to the top of the Serie A standings, Inter have their sights firmly set on recapturing their Serie A crown this season.

Suffering just a single domestic defeat across all competitions since the middle of September, Chivu’s side have also gained a fearsome reputation for their extended dominance on home soil.

Signing off October with a routine 3-0 romp against Fiorentina, the former Parma boss has seen his title contenders win all of their previous six straight showdowns at the San Siro by an aggregate sore of 16-3.

Martinez steals the show again

If Inter Milan are to claim an historic 21st domestic crown this season, then there is no doubt that their attacking talisman will have a leading role to play at the San Siro.

Opening the scoring here after just three minutes and only continuing to underline his status as Inter’s ultimate poster boys, Martinez has now recorded back-to-back strikes over the past week.

Once again getting on the scoresheet against European debutants Kairat Almaty on Wednesday night, Martinez has recorded four goals in his first three Champions League appearances.

Bagging a brace against Puerto Rico while away with the reigning world champions last month, the 28-year-old has also registered 15 direct goal contributions for club and country so far this season.

Putting in another Man of the Match performance on Sunday night, the 74-cap international is desperate to get his hands on a third domestic title.

Lazio at their inconsistent worst

While Lazio might have sprung a public upset last month as they claimed a 1-0 victory at home against historic rivals Juventus, Sunday’s guests have struggled to find any real stability this season.

Putting in a toothless display here, there still remains plenty of scrutiny on Maurizio Sarri’s shoulders and many around the Stadio Olimpico are making their frustrations heard.

Opening the 2025/26 campaign by losing three of their first four Serie A appearances, Lazio have rightfully come under hefty criticism and they face a real uphill battle in the race to book a lucrative European return.

Along with registering just five points from any of their first six Serie A showdowns on the road, the former Chelsea boss should also have a mounting headache over his side’s issues in the final third.

In fact, Sarri’s inconsistent squad have drawn a blank in all of their last three consecutive appearances outside of Rome.
