If you’re worried because you don’t know how many points you have taken off your licence, there are three easy ways to check. Here’s how.
In Spain, generally everyone in Spain starts out with 12 points on their licence. If you commit a driving offence, you will have points taken off your licence and will likely be fined too.
New drivers and anyone who regains their license after it has been suspended will only initially have 8 points, but if they do not commit any traffic violations, they can earn points every two or three years.Â
If you get down to zero points you will have your licence revoked and will not be able to continue driving.

If you’re not sure how many points you lost for certain traffic violations or haven’t updated your details with the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), there are ways of finding out.
Remember, you must always have a valid licence to be able to find out.
You can check the status of points in three different ways:
- Online by using your digital certificate, electronic ID or Cl@ve.
- From the miDGT app.
- By phone, by calling 060.Â
Online
Visit the follow DGT web page. Click on ‘Online Cl@ve’ at the top of the screen and identify yourself electronically in order to access your page. There you will be able to find out how many points you have left.Â

App
You can download the DGT app, miDGT here for free to your phone.
You will be able to access your status by using your digital certificate, cl@ve, or your personal data and a password. In the case of the latter you will be sent an SMS in order to access it.
By Phone
If you’re calling to find out how many points you have taken off, then you will need to make sure you have all your personal details with you such as your NIE.
DGT certificate
As well as checking your fines, violations and points, you can also request an official DGT certificate if you need to prove your points balance to a third party.
This has a cost of €8.67 and can be downloaded online. If you check in person at a DGT office, you will have to pay by debit or credit card.Â

The Driver Safety e-mail Address – DEV
Another easy way to find out how many points are being deducted is to sign up to Driver Safety e-mail Address or DEV. The DEV is an electronic notification system, which has the same legal effect as a paper notification.
You can register for this on the DGT website. Once you are registered for this service, you will get electronic messages sent to you.
You will also receive an SMS every time you receive a digital notification on the system, meaning that you’ll know exactly when you’ve received an e-mail too.Â
You can view them directly by logging into the application with your digital certificate or electronic ID.
The electronic system allows you to prove the date and time you received the notification and when you opened it, proving that you’ve actually received it. If the notification is sent to the DEV and you do not access it within 10 days, the notification will be considered as rejected.
Even if you sign up to the DEV, the DGT stresses that it’s still important that you update all your details with them, including your current postal address.
