How and When You Can See November’s Supermoon

Look up at the sky over the next couple days and you may spot the brightest and biggest supermoon of the year.

The November full moon, commonly known as the Beaver Moon, will be 2025’s second supermoon. Here’s what to know about this special phenomenon.

What is the Beaver Moon?

“Beaver Moon” is the term used to describe the full moon that takes place in November.

Each month’s full moon has a different name that carries cultural significance. The November full moon’s name stems from the fact that beavers start to take shelter in their dams around this time of year, according to the Almanac. Another possible explanation for the name is that this was also the season when people set beaver traps during the fur trade.

What is a supermoon?

“Supermoon” describes a full moon that looks bigger and brighter because its orbit brings it closer to Earth. When the moon is at its perigee—its closest point to Earth—it can look up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than the faintest moon of the year, according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Supermoons occur about three to four times each year.

The first supermoon this year was the Harvest Moon, which occurred in October. There will be a third and final supermoon this year in December, according to NASA.

When and how will you best be able to see the November supermoon?

The Beaver Moon’s peak illumination will be on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 8:19 a.m. ET, according to the Almanac. But you can also spot it the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 4 and the evening of Nov. 5. You should be able to see the moon without a telescope or binoculars, though using those instruments can help you see more detail on the moon’s surface.

The best way to see a supermoon is in an open, flat area with a clear view of the sky, so make sure to check your local forecast. Areas like fields, parks, and waterfronts are optimal spots to view the supermoon. And make sure to look up!
