Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has called for a tactical reset at Old Trafford, insisting that Bruno Fernandes should return to his more natural No. 10 role.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Hargreaves suggested pairing Bruno and Matheus Cunha as dual No. 10s behind Bryan Mbeumo up front would better exploit United’s attacking potential. He also floated the idea of using Amad Diallo as a left wing-back if manager Rúben Amorim wants to stick with a three-at-the-back formation.
Hargreaves argued that under the current 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 formations, Bruno has been forced into a deeper midfield role, effectively sacrificing some of his creative influence. He believes Bruno is being criticized unfairly and emphasized how vital the captain has been — “I can’t imagine where they’d be without him.”
Besides Bruno’s role, the tactical alignment of Cunha and Mbeumo has received attention. Hargreaves praised both newcomers, noting their goal contributions last season and believing that they have the capacity to lead the attacking line, provided the formation supports them properly. With Cunha and Bruno as No. 10s, and Mbeumo as the central striker, he sees a chance for United to become more threatening going forward.
Concerns extend beyond forward play. Hargreaves also highlighted the instability in United’s defensive line and goalkeeper selection. He argued that consistent personnel is needed in those areas to allow the attack to flourish and provide balance. United’s back-three has been rotated heavily, making cohesion difficult.
While admitting Amorim’s chosen formation has its merits, especially defensively, Hargreaves suggests tweaks are necessary. Using Amad as wing-back could allow flexibility in attack, especially if wing-backs push higher and wide. Such changes could allow Bruno more freedom in the final third.
As United continue to search for momentum this season, Hargreaves’ proposals add fuel to the growing debate: should Amorim adapt his system to maximize Bruno, Cunha, and Mbeumo, or double down on his current setup? Only results and team chemistry over the coming fixtures will tell if Hargreaves’ vision becomes reality.
