The team I am playing for in the German Club Championships is ETUF Essen, in Essen, Germany (just north of Dusseldorf). The other three teams are TC Singen, TC 1899 Blau-Weiss, Berlin & TSV Altenfurt (the hosts, near Nuremberg).
We play four singles and two doubles matches in each tie. Today we won 5/1. I played #1 singles against Sabine Henn, Carole DeBruin played at #2 singles against Petra Gratz (a very strong player), Luisa Gouveia at #3 against Sylvia Huber and Reinhilde Adams against Renate Kindlier. After singles, Luisa and I played Henn/Gratz and Carole/Karien Theeuwes played Sylvia & Renate.
We warmed up using the balls in the photo below…it was pretty damp this morning and these balls had been used a lot already…
I won my singles 63 60…I was down 3/1 and Sabine was playing very well, even hitting some aces. I had to scramble (winning ugly) from there and scrapped out some games from 0-40 and 15-40 to win the rest of the games in about 1:45 including warmup.
In doubles, we had a tough match, 64 64 in two hours (including warmup). Lots of lobs, lots of scrambling by both of us.
In between singles and doubles, the host club put out a variety of German cakes (many were more like a cobbler than a cake), which went over well with the players.
We also had the dinner tonight in the club’s restaurant, which featured Greek food. It was a nice dinner and the hosts have been very nice and welcoming.
Tomorrow we play Singen, which beat Berlin today 5/1. Berlin had only five players, one of whom arrived injured and one, Katrin Dippner, who retired 5/2 down at #1 singles to Sandra Hopfner…the Berlin team abandoned the doubles matches. Hopfner is 61 and a very good player I think…WTN less than 19!
