Favourites to become new Swansea manager after sacking head coach Alan Sheehan

We take a look at who are amongst the favourites to become new Swansea City manager after sacking head coach Alan Sheehan.

Stuart James of The Athletic first broke the news that the 39 year old had lost his job following Saturday’s 4-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town.

He had become Swansea’s permanent manager in April on a three-year deal after impressing while caretaker from February, guiding the club to 24 points in 13 games and an 11th-place finish last season.

But with the Swans now sitting 18th in the Championship table with four wins and six defeats in 15 matches, and booed off in recent matches, his time at the club has come to an end.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Swansea City can confirm the club has parted ways with head coach Alan Sheehan.

The 39-year-old was appointed as full-time head coach in April following two highly-impressive stints in interim charge of the Swans.

Alan initially took over in December 2023, overseeing seven games with a win percentage of 42.86 per cent.

His second spell in charge saw him record a win percentage of 58.3 per cent from 13 games, including a run of five wins in a row.

However, in the wake of a disappointing run, it is felt results and performances do not meet the standards expected at this stage of the season, and we have had to take this difficult decision.

The process to appoint a new head coach is already under way. We will update supporters on this process once it has been concluded.

Swansea City owners Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen said: “Alan has been instrumental in helping improve the club through two periods of time. Alan has a tireless work ethic, an honest approach and a positive attitude. He has put his full effort into the job on behalf of the club.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Alan for all of his hard work during his time at Swansea City. We wish Alan and his family all the best for the future.”

Swansea booed off after being thrashed by Ipswich with Burgess scoring two own goals

Head coach Alan Sheehan said after the weekend’s game: “The first half was incredibly disappointing, we were far below par.

“We turned the ball over way too much and you cannot do that against a team like this.

“We made a couple of changes at half-time, and tried to be more aggressive in the right areas and we got a really well-worked goal.

“But then we turned the ball over again, we hit the post, but you cannot play like we did – especially in the first half today – and expect to get anything out of it.

“I understand the frustration everyone including the fans is feeling, we all watch the same game so I do understand it. We feel the same.

“I have had tough times in my career, I have been in the game a long time and I understand what we are trying to build but we also know the results are not what we want.”

Here’s how fans reacted with the favourites to become new Swansea manager to be revealed after the sacking head coach Alan Sheehan…

@craigowen15: Choice of 3 for me, Carrick, Oneil or Hellberg

@mgevans5: Not entirely surprised by this. International break gives them time to get a replacement in and maybe some time on the training ground. Kjell Knutsen might be one they go for – has been linked in the past and he looks set to miss out on Celtic job. Brendan Rodgers available

@ellisroberts016: Gutted it hasn’t worked out for him, and he seems like an outstanding guy but this is definitely the correct decision. We have got to get this replacement correct. #Swans

@ForeseeaBall: Thank fuck. Don’t care about that initial bounce last season, it was so obvious this would happen and it would end like this by Christmas. Still time to turnaround and at least they pulled the trigger now. Got to get next one right, a lot of good options out there..

@swansnews: So that appears to be the end of the Alan Sheehan era – it really had to happen as we were heading nowhere fast under him. A really likeable guy and wish him all the best for the future but Swansea City is bigger than any one man. Now we see what happens next #Swans #SwanseaCity

@StevenSOS1987: Can’t explain my relief!

@JordanWebber96: The correct decision in sacking Alan Sheehan. Thank you for steering us away from relegation last season, but this was the correct move going forward for our football club before it was too late in the season. The next appointment needs to be more aligned with our identity. 🦢

@Gate2Podcast: Happy with this! A really good bloke! Done a great job as caretaker (especially the second stint). But he got it horribly wrong this season. Refusal and unwillingness to free the players from their shackles. Too negative. Scared of losing. Unable to win. Wish him the best.

@luv4scfc: #BringBackBrendan #Swans

@gareththomas05: Thank the lord! Right decision and was never going to work. Hope they get the next appointment right. #swans #swanseacity

@james_felton1: Thanks for stabilising results in two spells which certainly helped is retain Championship status, but it was not going to work long-term. If our summer recruitment is the guide, I am excited to see who our next manager is. #JackArmy

@sparkyjack84: Seemed a decent bloke, but I didn’t have any faith he could get us out of this whole.

@egansmind: Haven’t seen anything official yet but the right decision if true. Deserved the job but couldn’t kick on from last season. Let’s hope the next manager brings all the fans together #SwanseaCity 🦢

@JacksMaltese: Thank you Alan Sheehan for your efforts during your 2 spells as our manager! However, this was the right decision taken at the right time with the international window starting. Let’s hope the replacement is an ambitious one and will not take very long to appoint! #yjb #swans 🦢

@Ross_Pow_10: Let’s hope the club had a plan B in place and can secure their preferred candidate quickly. We don’t need a caretaker for a few weeks and a long drawn out process. #Swans

@milkshake86: Awful decision..his first difficult spell and the club get rid after a 3 year deal less than 4 months ago.. So a DoF and a manager gone within 17 games. Perhaps the person responsible for the poor signings can also take accountability and go aswell..

@_callumfowler: Been coming that, Swansea are sleep walking into serious bother and with the summer they’ve had should be looking upwards if anything, been shite last couple month

@swansea_indy: Swans fans split on Sheehan sacking but it seems to be edging closer, that result on Saturday Sheehan agrees by all accounts wasn’t acceptable. Seems the board have agreed and discussions yesterday were about him leaving. Terms yesterday were not agreed. But that will obviously change now. How one result can change a managers career ? Or is it a case of enough is enough as a collective set of results ? He has a 41% win rate but that includes last season. Can’t see why a board can support him after the defeat to Ipswich. Regardless of their desire to retain him. Apparently players won’t be happy but some will accept it. The club are considering retaining Darren O’Dea but it isn’t definite. If not then Richard Stearman is the obvious choice, however, Mark Fotheringham is available (coach at Celtic) as far as we know despite Norwich interest. He would be a cheaper option.
