Ljubljana – European Commissioner for Financial Services Maria Luis Albuquerque highlighted the importance of a unified approach and awareness of the numerous benefits of a single European capital market during her two-day visit to Slovenia. Slovenian Finance Minister Klemen Boštjančič assessed that the European Commission’s approach to the development of capital markets is correct and favorable for Slovenia as well.
The development of capital markets is a priority for Slovenia, as the volume of available financial resources will not be able to meet all needs, Boštjančič said in a statement to the media on the sidelines of the conference on promoting the growth of European capital markets in Ljubljana, organized by the Ministry of Finance.
“Slovenia, as a highly banking-oriented economy, is missing out on a number of opportunities offered by the capital market, which is why the government has prioritized this area from the very beginning of its term,” he emphasized.
Among the measures, he highlighted the capital market development strategy adopted in 2023, which, according to him, has been intensively implemented since then. The latest step towards the development of this area is the law on individual investment accounts, which was enacted in June and introduced a new form of long-term savings for individuals.
He emphasized that the European Commission’s plans in this area are fully aligned with Slovenia’s priorities. Commissioner Albuquerque also welcomed this. “This is a joint project. The savings and investment union is designed to benefit all citizens and all businesses in Europe,” she emphasized.
According to her, the European Union can only be successful in this area if its member states are united, and support will also be provided by other stakeholders in addition to decision-makers. As she called for at the round table during the conference, we should be more connected and understand that what is good for the union as a whole is also good for each individual member state.
“The development of a single capital market offers enormous opportunities, from which every EU citizen can benefit,” she emphasized. (September 23)
