The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has launched disciplinary proceedings against its Bulgarian member after months of internal probes, the Luxembourg-based body announced on Thursday.
The college of prosecutors “decided to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the Bulgarian European Prosecutor,” the EPPO said in a statement. It is the first case of its kind for the four-year-old office, which investigates major financial crimes across the EU.
The prosecutor in question is Teodora Georgieva. In March, the EPPO opened an administrative inquiry into her after anonymous tip-offs and videos allegedly showed her meeting a well-known criminal figure — revelations that sent shockwaves through Bulgaria’s judicial system.
Earlier this year, Georgieva said that her EPPO colleagues were investigating her after she withdrew from a fraud case linked to a Bulgarian gas storage facility.
Denying the claims, she said she felt threatened by a Bulgarian MP to leave her post.
