Dispersal Order Imposed After Fireworks Chaos in Cambridge

Cambridge, United Kingdom (Brussels Morning Newspaper) –  A dispersal order was imposed in Cambridge after widespread reports of anti-social behaviour involving fireworks. Police received six calls from residents reporting large groups setting off pyrotechnics, obstructing traffic, and creating public safety hazards.

A dispersal order was enforced in Cambridge following a wave of disturbances linked to fireworks, prompting swift action by Cambridgeshire Police. The measure, announced over the weekend, granted officers temporary powers to direct individuals suspected of causing or likely to cause anti-social behaviour to leave certain areas immediately.

The order was implemented after a series of emergency calls alerted authorities to the escalating situation across several parts of the city. Residents reported seeing large groups of teenagers lighting and throwing fireworks into public spaces and roadways, causing both alarm and disruption.

According to police, at least six separate reports were received on Saturday evening describing fireworks being set off recklessly, resulting in the temporary closure of parts of Hills Avenue due to safety concerns. The force said that “approximately 100 teenagers” had gathered, blocking traffic and igniting fireworks dangerously close to vehicles and homes.

Police Response

Around a dozen police officers were dispatched to the scene to disperse the crowd and restore order. When officers arrived, many of the teenagers scattered and left the area, avoiding confrontation with law enforcement. Authorities confirmed that the dispersal order covered several key streets in Cambridge that had experienced recurring anti-social gatherings in recent weeks.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said the decision was not taken lightly but was necessary to maintain public safety. “Reports of large groups setting off fireworks, obstructing roads, and intimidating residents were deeply concerning. The dispersal order was issued to give officers the legal authority to intervene quickly and prevent further escalation,” the spokesperson explained.

The dispersal order gave police additional authority under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, allowing them to order individuals to leave a designated area and not return for up to 48 hours. Those who ignore such orders face arrest and possible prosecution.

Residents’ Reactions

The events drew strong reactions from Cambridge residents, many of whom expressed relief at the police response but also frustration at the recurring nature of such incidents during the fireworks season. One resident described the scene as “chaotic,” adding that it was “impossible to drive down Hills Avenue” as fireworks exploded near parked cars.

Parents also voiced concerns about the risks posed to children and vulnerable residents. “It’s terrifying — these fireworks were going off in the street with no thought for safety,” said another resident. “You could hear the bangs echoing all around the neighbourhood. It felt like the whole area was under siege.”

A Growing Safety Concern

Authorities across the UK have reported similar issues in recent years, particularly around Halloween and Bonfire Night, when fireworks are most commonly used. Police forces nationwide have been using dispersal orders as a tool to tackle groups engaging in anti-social behaviour, with particular concern about underage individuals handling fireworks illegally.

Fireworks misuse can lead to serious injuries, property damage, and psychological distress for residents, as well as risks to pets and wildlife. Cambridgeshire Police have repeatedly urged the public to purchase fireworks only from licensed vendors and to use them responsibly in safe, controlled environments.

Community Policing and Prevention

The latest incidents have prompted calls for a review of community engagement strategies and youth outreach in Cambridge. Some councillors and local leaders have suggested increasing police presence in hotspot areas during festive periods, while others advocate for education campaigns about the dangers of reckless fireworks use.

A community safety officer said,

“We need to do more to engage with young people before these incidents occur. Dispersal orders can manage immediate risks, but they don’t solve the root cause, which often stems from boredom and lack of safe recreational options.”

Police confirmed they are working closely with local schools and community groups to raise awareness about the consequences of such behaviour. The force also reminded residents that parents could be held responsible if their children were caught using fireworks illegally.

Temporary Calm Restored

By Sunday evening, police confirmed that the situation had stabilised. Officers maintained a visible presence throughout the affected areas to reassure residents and deter further disturbances. No arrests were reported as of late Sunday night, but investigations are ongoing to identify individuals involved in the earlier incidents.

Residents were urged to remain vigilant and to report any future instances of fireworks misuse or anti-social gatherings to the police via non-emergency channels unless immediate danger arises.

Moving Forward

While the dispersal order expired at 9:00 p.m. GMT on Sunday, authorities have not ruled out reissuing it if similar behaviour reoccurs. Cambridgeshire Police reiterated that public safety remains their top priority, and further measures could be implemented to ensure order during the ongoing fireworks season.

The latest episode in Cambridge underscores the delicate balance between celebration and safety — and the need for responsible enjoyment of fireworks. As police continue to monitor the situation, community leaders hope for a quieter and safer lead-up to Bonfire Night.
