CLUB STATEMENT:

The club statement, via www.rangers.co.uk, read: Rangers Football Club today confirms the appointment of Danny Röhl as men’s first-team head coach.

Röhl was most recently in charge of Sheffield Wednesday, and now joins Rangers on an initial two-and-a-half-year deal.

Röhl brings experience from some of Europe’s top football environments, having begun his coaching career at RB Leipzig, where he progressed to assisting Ralph Hasenhuttl before following him to Southampton in 2018.

He then became assistant manager to Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich in 2019, helping the club win the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and UEFA Champions League in his first season. The following year saw Bayern retain the Bundesliga and add the UEFA Super Cup, DFL Supercup and FIFA Club World Cup before Röhl and Flick moved on to take charge of the German national team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In October 2023, he became a manager for the first time, taking on the job at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship. They were bottom of the table and winless in their first 11 matches, but Röhl guided them to safety and then to a 12th-place finish last season, against a challenging backdrop.

Röhl will now assume the mantle of Head Coach at Ibrox. He starts immediately, with his first match in charge coming against SK Brann on Thursday in the UEFA Europa League.

Danny Röhl said: “It is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of Head Coach at such an incredible club, recognised around the world.

“I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions, and my staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club.

The expectations here are clear. The fans want to see results now – my mentality and experience is to think in exactly the same way and I have belief in the players that we can achieve this.
“We have no time to waste, we start straight away. I respect that trust is earned and understand we have to give the supporters confidence in what we are doing by showing it on the pitch from the start.

“The expectations are huge and I love this challenge because I set high standards for myself and the team too.

“Rangers is built on a tradition of hard work, unity and success – that is exactly what you will get from me and what I want my team to represent for all of you.

“I’m looking forward to meeting the squad and getting down to work ahead of Thursday’s game away to Brann.”

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh commented: “We’re very pleased to welcome Danny to Rangers, an ambitious coach who shares the club’s hunger for progress and success. His experience at elite level, in high pressure environments, makes him a strong fit for what we expect here.

We know the past few months have been challenging, but our focus has always been on getting the right person, who is ready to immediately embrace this football club and the demands that come with it.
“Danny impressed us with his vision, his character, and his understanding of what Rangers stands for. We believe he can help restore pride, momentum, and ultimately success.”

Vice Chairman Paraag Marathe said: “This has been a thorough process to ensure we identified the right person to lead the club forward.

“Danny clearly has tactical intelligence and a hunger to match the ambitions of Rangers. With Danny at the helm, we intend to compete through every minute on the pitch in all competitions.”

Chief Executive Patrick Stewart said: “Danny brings real conviction, clarity and leadership to the role.

We know results this season have fallen below our expectations, but with Danny and his staff in place, we’re confident we can get this season back on track.
“It’s now our job to give him every support possible to move the club forward quickly and decisively.”

Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell added: “Danny has the qualities required to succeed here, allied with being an exceptional coach.

“He has worked in some of the most demanding football environments in the world, where winning is the only expectation, and we believe that background has prepared him for Rangers.

His job will be to get the best out of the players and build a team that, first and foremost, wins, as we all target success this season.

Danny Röhl said: “Winning is the most important thing. We don’t have a lot of time, but I won’t use that as an excuse. We know where we are and which direction we want to go.

“We want to play attacking football and that means we have to press high and with intensity, we have to be connected in all parts of the game. We need to be good in transition moments in both directions and that means all of the players need to hunt the ball. We want to create a lot of chances and goals.

“Fans don’t want to see draws, or small wins, they want to see exciting wins and that’s what we will try to do.

“It is a demanding league and it is very intensive. You will have different challenges, especially when you go away, there are different stadiums, but I think my group will handle these things. I am looking forward to it. We are a huge club who should control games

“I took a lot from the last years at the highest level. I want to be at an ambitious club, and I think this is exactly the challenge I want to have. This is an ambitious club, we want to win things and not just in two or three years as soon as possible, and for this we have to start now.

“We know what we have to do of course, it is a demanding club, and this is the reason I am here. I demand a lot from my players, my coaching team and a lot from myself.

“It is about winning games, and we have to start very soon, we have the first opportunity on Thursday in the Europa League. I think it is amazing to be part of this fantastic club, and I am really looking forward to it.

“We have a great balance with exciting young players. I have worked with Djeidi for the last two years, and we are proud of him. We have experienced players too and we need that balance.

“I am a coach who is looking forward to working with everyone. It is not about the age of the player for me, it is about their quality, and I look at this squad, and we have really good players. But my job now is to bring that quality onto the pitch and make a good team with high quality and that’s what I want to do.

“When I look at the schedule, I am very excited about the different challenges. We have Europe, the league, and the important cup game as well. In the next three weeks we can really influence our season, and I think our mindset is that we have to go into the games to win. We have the quality, but we have to work and invest a lot.”

Here’s what the fans had to say after Danny Rohl gives his reaction on being appointed as new Rangers head coach…

@timrud1: It was bitter how he left us, but be in no doubt he worked absolute miracles at Sheffield Wednesday. Always had a soft spot for rangers after you came down pre season, hope he does the business for you.

@tj1307: I think its shocking that our support are being so bloody nasty. He wanted the job but was messed about and then when he got another shot took it. There wasn’t a long list of managers wanting to take it on. We need to stop the crap and get behind him. Welcome to Rangers ❤️🤍💙

@RhysMorgan2015: At Southampton he was number two to Ralph – we were very successful with a bang average team. When he left as number two we got progressively worse. Hes a very good manager and tactically. Expect high pressing and quick passes through the lines. Brilliant for European games.

@RickyKeogh: Rangers fans, some right daft comments on here. As a Wednesday fan I was fucked off with the bloke the way he went about leaving the club, however I expect him to do a great job for you (If the fans back him). He’s nothing like RM, if the players don’t fit his system he’ll adapt

@rfczach72: “a club with traditions and you need to respect those traditions.” keep that suit n tie on son

@siwhiteley14: Fully connected us as SWFC fans back to the club. He had players performing above their level and brought new and exciting players to the club. If he had been backed id have no doubts he would have got us into the playoffs. Back him and best of luck 👍

@barnesy5k: All I can say is, as an SWFC fan, he was the2nd beat manager we had in 50 years behind Big Ron. Kept the club in the championship despite no financial backing and an almost impossible starting position. Can’t blame him at all for leaving. Give him chance.

@WTIDPOD: Afternoon Gers, We’ve got boxes and boxes of t-shirts with Röhl’s face on. Can’t seem to shift it. Thanks in advance.

@Briggsy1867: The entitlement here is hilarious, you’re miles behind Celtic and even Hearts right now 🤦🏻‍♂️ under Röhl Rangers will challenge for the title, and for cups. He’s a brilliant young manager, adaptable not stuck in one system etc. He will surprise a lot of you
