Crystal Palace fans escorted by riot police to Strasbourg after fighting each other

Crystal Palace fans escorted by riot police to Strasbourg after fighting each other in Strasbourg’s Place du Marché Gayot.

This came ahead of their UEFA Conference League fixture against RC Strasbourg on Thursday night, with ‘joeacton’ from the Holmesdale Online forum saying the brawl broke out after a smaller group (believed to be the “Addington” firm) repeatedly goaded the main Holmesdale Fanatics (HF) group.

The situation got out of control when chairs were chucked, punches were thrown with windows smashed, putting women, children, and innocent fans in danger.

Several people were hurt as the fight was quickly soon put to an end, bars stopped serving, and riot police soon arrived on scene.

The troublemaking minority were reportedly escorted on foot under heavy guard to the stadium (a one-hour march as punishment instead of using trams), while the vast majority of well-behaved Palace fans were left scattered and affected.

The involved hooligans were said to have been later seen casually drinking in another pub and even attended the match in the home end.

The incident has been widely condemned as disgraceful and is expected to damage Crystal Palace fans’ reputation for future European away trips.

joeacton of the Holmesdale Online forum wrote: “I was sat in the middle of that when it all kicked off. Disgraceful from both sets. The smaller group (who I now understand to be be Addington) were goading the HF for a while before it happened. Could tell it was simmering.

“When it started, there were women and families amongst those just sat down enjoying their evening, suddenly chairs flying through the air. Was cleaned up pretty quickly but there was quite a few people who were hurt in the cross fire 🙁

“All the bars stopped serving, so fans started to find other places in town. I saw the same Addington group sat happily enjoying a beer in another pub shortly afterwards, unbothered by the mayhem they had caused. And they were also in the ground (home end) for the game.

“Really sad. I’m sure it will have put a dampener on it for lots of people. And no doubt we will get different treatment for future European away games now.”

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner speaking to TNT Sports: “When you twice have an empty goal in front of you and you miss the goal twice hitting the post, you should be 3-1 up. Then we have the big chance against the keeper and then in the next action we are 2-1 down.

“It has happened too many times this season when we did not decide the game when we could. And of course even after the free-kick we were not sharp enough. In the end I think that we lacked one or two percent and that is why we lost against a good Strasbourg team.”

Glasner speaking to TNT Sports about conceding so soon after half-time: “Again, it could be straight after we got 1-0 that we could have scored the second. We had the same situation against Brentford in the Premier League. There we missed but we could keep the clean sheet so we won the game.

“Strasbourg have very good, quick players, we knew it and ok you can concede the equaliser but then we have the next empty net we are missing, and then the next big chance against the keeper that we are missing, and then you lose the game. I think that is also why we deserved to lose today.

“It was the second defeat missing too many chances. Against Larnaca missing too many chances too. It is a little bit the story. We need more players who show up and score goals. On the other side nobody does it on purpose and at the moment it happens too often. You can’t always rely on keeping the clean sheet because the opponent is also doing well.”

Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell speaking to TNT Sports: “We created some decent chances, the two open goals were great chances, but we just have to be more clinical. I think if we score that second goal I think we take away the three points.

“We know in every game we will get chances and every game we can win. We step onto the pitch knowing that we can take away three points from every team but today that didn’t happen.”

On his goal: “Something that I have been trying to work on and this season has got a bit better. Happy I contributed but unfortunately we didn’t take away three points”

On managing the busy fixture schedule: “It’s part of being a footballer. You want to play in these games. You want to play every day. You want to play as much as you can. This is something we want and you can’t really complain.”

Strasbourg defender Ben Chilwell speaking to TNT Sports: “I loved it. To go one nil down and then show the fight that we showed to get ourselves back into the game and then go on and get the winner.

“It’s brilliant for the fans. I thought they were top tonight. They have got to take a lot of credit for bringing us back into the game, and that is why after the game we showed them our support. Great attitude from the boys and brilliant from the fans, so a top night all round. “

On boss Liam Rosenior: “He pushes us everyday. He is a very ambitious manager and he has made it clear since the day that I got here in numerous meetings what he thinks this group can achieve, that’s trophies. It’s what he wants and we know that. It’s a very ambitious group.

“I am one of the more senior players at 28, so I feel I have the responsibility to push the group and I am doing that. With such a young, energetic group that want to do well, you can see that out on the pitch. Everyone wants to get on the ball and run for each other.”

Chilwell speaking to TNT Sports on potentially returning to the England squad for the World Cup:

“All I can do is come in here every day and work hard, train well and try and help the team when I do play. I just want to try and play as much football as I can this season and give myself the best chance, that is all I can do. Whatever happens in the summer is up to the manager at England and all I can do is keep working hard here and we see where it ends up.”

“When you work as hard as my team did, you earn your luck…”

Here’s what Twitter users said with Crystal Palace fans escorted by riot police to Strasbourg after fighting each other…

@_GeorgeCPFC_: Happened in Lublin, happened at many other games too, needs to stop it’s embarrassing

@Donrobbie84: First European away day and don’t know how to act pathetic fanbase

@uptheaddicks9: Throwing chairs around at each other but calls in a police escort to hide behind when any sort of aggression comes their way from elsewhere.

@maxpalace03: Beyond embarrassing and everyone involved should be ashamed. Addo (or whatever they’re called) and the HF need to get a grip of themselves. They’re all pathetic. Don’t be surprised if we get a smaller allocation for away games after the group stages btw.

@Sam1CPFC: Imagine paying money to go watch 22 men run around on a pitch and then acting like this before the match. Just mad cringe

@cpfcchick95: Embarrassing. Such a disrespect for the place your visiting…

@cpfcjc: We got locked in a bar got free shots as a result of this 👍🏻

@26RebornAFC: Booing your own lads and calling them wankers while having it in Europe rather than steaming in with them. Game has well and truly gone

@chorlton_james: Strange, just strange. Our first, and potentially only European tour is meant to be a unifying experience. Idiots.

@LukaCPFC_: What are we doing here boys

@steelej27: Why are palace fans scrapping each other?!
