Balls thrown onto pitch and Norwich fans walk out in protest during 2-0 defeat to Hull

Balls were thrown onto the pitch and Norwich fans walk out in protest during their side’s 2-0 defeat to Hull on Saturday afternoon.

Mid-way through the first half, Jeffrey Schlupp saw his shot come back off the crossbar, with Norwich having enough clear chances to be two or three ahead.

Just after the break, Joe Gelhardt put Hull ahead, Matt Crooks nodded the ball into the path of Gelhardt who made his way past Harry Darling and got to it before the onrushing Vladan Kovacevic to put the Tigers ahead.

Chris Goreham (BBC Radio Norfolk commentator): “You can hear the atmosphere – this isn’t a crowd that believes they will get back into the game.

“Norwich haven’t looked like scoring in this second half, not like the first half where they missed chance after chance.

“Norwich can’t even make the ball stick in Hull territory at the moment.”

Then in the 87th minute, Darko Gyabi made it 2-0, leading to boos around the ground as Norwich fans made their way for the exit.

Ahead of the 3pm kick offs, Hull move into the top six and extending their unbeaten run to six games. Norwich dominated the first half but missed chances, leading to a sixth straight home league defeat.

Fans called for head coach Liam Manning and sporting director Ben Knapper to be sacked.

Before the game, Norwich fans planned to throw tennis balls onto the pitch over the club’s proposal to relocate over 3,000 season ticket holders from the lower River End for away fans, as part of stadium redevelopment.

A statement read: “1902 group are very disappointed to hear the football club’s decision to go ahead with the stadium redevelopment and back senior leadership through what are completely unacceptable circumstances.

“Unfortunately, our initial protest is now no longer loud enough.

“As a result, we announce a tennis ball protest on Saturday, November 1 at 19.02 on the clock.

“We ask every supporter to take part in throwing a tennis ball on the pitch in protest against the current ownership at the club and the decisions being taken.”

Norwich’s Liam Manning:

“That was poor of me and I apologise for that. Sometimes the disappointment gets the better of you – and I didn’t want to go out there and antagonise people – but I was wrong not to go on the pitch.

“It was the same as a number of games recently. We started brightly, with purpose and created a lot of chances – but we didn’t take them.

“In the second half we knew they would change things – they had to the way the game was going – but we don’t deal with it and they score one of the softest goals I have seen at this level.

“Then we are under pressure – and we aren’t coping very well under pressure at the moment. When you are on the ropes you have to scrap and fight.

“To have so many excellent moments in the first half and so many terrible moments in the second really is tough to take.

“Of course I am hurting, it’s not nice and I don’t like it. I know it’s unacceptable to lose the number of games we have.

“I can look at myself and say I am giving everything to turn it around but I know something has to change and there will be discussion about it”.

🔰🗣️ “I’m sure there’ll be discussions. Something has to change, but what wont change is the group in the dressing room.”

Liam Manning post match. “There’s a lot that needs to change.”

Says some of the decisions being taken by players on the pitch are worse than anything he’s seen in his career. Even managing in League One. Have a listen to the full interview here. pic.twitter.com/GAJEfQ1pOy

Hull’s Sergej Jakirovic:

“In the first half we just survived. They were much better than us and we couldn’t really do much in and out of possession.

“They had a lot of chances and we were fortunate that they didn’t take any of them.

“I knew we could not play again like that so we changed things at half-time and that gave us a lot more stability in terms of our shape.

“Then we get a goal and that gives us the confidence to go on and win the game.

“It was a great team effort in the end. We were not good in the first half but the players stuck together and showed a lot of character and fight to get a huge victory, a huge three points.”

Twitter users reacted amid loud boos and balls thrown onto pitch as Norwich fans protest during the 2-0 defeat to Hull…

@mattjohnson333: “MANNING WHERE ARE YOU” is the cry from the city fans who saw him piss off at full time. Knapper is priority here but my god Liam Manning is more than accountable. Get the both out of our club asap. #ncfc #canarycall

@Nath09wright: I don’t care if we “played well” for 45 mins. Under this management, that’s as good as it will ever get. We are already being cut adrift with no way of winning in sight… MA hasn’t got a clue… it might already be too late. #NCFC

@CornishCanary: We need to be honest now. The quality in that squad in L2 / L1 at best (Sarge aside) that’s being kind. It’s been obvious for some time. Zero quality, slow, immobile, very little heart. Tactics / identity seem hard to understand but that is just one part of this mess #ncfc

@James_NCFC91: Clueless, rudderless, this club is on a downward spiral and there is no one in control of it. Who is actually going to make a change? I’m so disconnected from this football club right now. It needs to change it’s a joke! #CanaryCall #ncfc @BobRutler

@samuellangan: That second 45 was evidence of a coach who’s inflexible, passive and out of his depth. McConville was a detriment to possession and could have been switched at any point after HT. One good passing move on 66 mins, the rest was hopeful crosses and predictable horseshoe-ball. #NCFC

@BenM3011: We all saw it coming at half time when we didn’t make it count. Again what is there to say bar utter dejection and that Knapper and Manning have been a total disaster. #NCFC

@AntonyFromNR7: If you don’t want to play for the coach, fine. But if you don’t want to play for the badge many of us have kept close to our hearts for 5-10-15-20-30-40-50 years, get the fuck to stepping tonight. If you love our club, get back to fucking work. #ncfc #otbc

@ReEdYmAnn: What? Again? You mean doing the same things everytime and expecting different results isn’t working? Who’d have thought it?

@Bigfish_Kyle: Saddest thing is when they scored the second I didn’t feel a thing because I just don’t care anymore. Knapper and manning have killed my love for Norwich the only thing I held onto with this club was Sargent and they’ve killed him as well

@rontheballcity: I’m sorry but our fan protests are a complete embarrassment to football. Same during the Worthy Out days, when a handful would gather at the directors entrance. To think back to the Chase Out protests, when people really did protest properly with passion and conviction #ncfc

Good job our owner told us during the week that Manning (the bloke who has disappeared down the tunnel) has their full support.

Lost every home game this year.

That’s 7 home losses in a row.

6 defeats in a row home and away.

No wins in 9.

Lost the derby for the first time in 16 years.
