Arsenal fan Ty speaks out on ‘being throttled’ by Sunderland security steward

Arsenal fan Ty speaks out on ‘being throttled’ by a Sunderland security steward following the 2-2 draw earlier this month.

The AFTV star, Taiwo Ogunlabi, was forcibly removed with a steward holding him near the throat after responding “we’re top of the league” to Sunderland fans taunting Arsenal supporters.

Ty says that the incident began when home fans got “in our faces” after the late equaliser and insists he wasn’t abusive or swearing.

Appearing on an episode of AFTV, Ty and host Robbie Lyle deemed the steward to have been physical with his intervention described as “way over the top,” while acknowledging stewards have a difficult job keeping the peace.

Ty said: “What happens was we come out at the Sunderland fans were in our faces, I replied and the steward grabbed me and he is way over the top.

“I replied “We are top of the league”, I had not been abusive, I wasn’t swearing, I am only answering them, but the steward didn’t like it.

“What I would say, a tip for Sunderland, when you have a game like that and it finishes like that, you can’t have fans in their faces, because that is where the trouble could be.

“We came out and they were in our faces, if that is Sunderland against Newcastle it would never happen because it would have been serious. I think because of the way the game ended you have to let us go first or Sunderland fans go first.”

Lyle added: “I have to say I did not see any problems, I came out a little later to be fair.

‘I got it when I came out of the ground, I am not having a go at Sunderland fans because it was banter, I don’t know about your situation but Sunderland fans were giving me loads of banter and I understand it.

“When I look at it, I think the steward was over the top, Ty is just responding to them saying ‘top of the league’, he’s firing back at them like they are firing back at him.

“I don’t think he needed to grab you like that around the neck and push you out like that, I felt that was over the top. He did not need to do that.

“Stewards have got a hard job, let me say that as well, police in particular. They have to strike a balance every game of keeping everybody peaceful and don’t want it to be a hostile environment. The police in this country do a really good job as they are there but try not to be in your face and create a hostile vibe.

“I am not calling for anyone’s head. I can see what he was trying to do to remove you from the situation, but I feel he was too over the top.”

This is how Twitter users reacted as Arsenal fan Ty speaks out on ‘being throttled’ by a Sunderland security steward…

@ash_routh: I was there, the steward probably saved him from getting a beating with how he was acting. Yes, a touch over excessive but he was antagonising the Sunderland fans really bad and was 🤏 far from potentially getting a slapping.

@mikesmith145: Bloke seems like an entitled dickhead. Who up here would have any idea who he is ? Fantasy celebrity…… probably saved by the steward to be fair !

@SC008Y: Shut up you clowns he shouldn’t have been going on like a twat. Steward probably helped him not get a smack

@FulwelI: He should be thanking the steward. Ty was charging at Sunderland fans, trying to get in their faces. Majority of people don’t know who he is and his background. Takes 1 person with bad intentions for someone to seriously get hurt. If anything AFTV is to blame for neglect.

@manjk8: So why not tell ur boy to relax at times where he could’ve gotten himself in a lot of trouble – that guy saved him… seriously wake up lol

@Young_Dennis: You guys encourage Ty and his arrogance and petulance. He is such an idiot acting the way he does and talking to ppl the way he does.

@GraemeClarum5w: Steward did him a favour getting him out the way

@rphillip32_: Ty comes off as very arrogant and then he plays the victim. I understand he’s a passionate fan but this situation is avoidable if he walks away like everyone else.

@KevinMetca7731: The steward stopped him from getting battered. The steward saved his life. Arrogant wankers.

@Garyb28Gary: Can’t have it both ways. Everything on your channel is over the top. Steward saved him. If he carries on that he is gonna get a good hiding

@MrRipsaw1: Sunderland fans regularly mix with with away fans in the town and in the bars before and after games without any issues, then one fan starts gobbing off and has to be manhandled away for their own safety. Should be thanking the Steward.

@Michael__Bird_: Ty was aggressive towards whoever he was aiming his words at, was probably more than likely told/asked to walk away, didn’t so the steward did what was needed to remove him from the situation, fully justified for Ty being a bellend

@Kettylegged: don’t antagonise opposition fans? The steward saved Ty from himself because someone would’ve clipped him. He can count himself lucky.
