Arises News Anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, 29, was attacked and killed at her Katampe residence Abuja, as Nigerian Police launch manhunt for the suspected killers.
ARISE News Channel is mourning the death of one of its rising stars, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her home in Abuja.
The 29-year-old journalist, known for her work as a news anchor, reporter, and producer, was attacked in the early hours of Monday at her residence in Katampe, a quiet district in Nigeria’s capital. Police confirmed they have opened an investigation and launched a manhunt for those responsible.
In a statement on Monday, ARISE News described Maduagwu — affectionately called “Sommie” by colleagues — as a “vibrant voice” who connected deeply with viewers and brought professionalism and warmth to the newsroom.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved colleague,” the network said. “Sommie was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a lawyer, mentor, and friend to many. Her voice is now silent, but her passion and legacy will endure.”

The management called on security agencies to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to justice, stressing the need for accountability in a country where violent robberies and home invasions are an ongoing concern.
The incident has reignited public debate about security in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, where residents have reported a rise in violent crimes in recent months. Armed robbery, kidnapping, and burglary have left many citizens on edge, despite repeated assurances from law enforcement agencies.
Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, confirmed the incident in a brief statement to reporters. “Yes, we are aware, and investigation has commenced,” she said, promising further updates as the case develops.
Friends, colleagues, and viewers have taken to social media to pay tribute, sharing memories of Maduagwu’s work and advocacy. Many described her as a bright and determined young journalist whose future was tragically cut short.
Her death marks another difficult moment for Nigeria’s media community, which has faced growing risks in recent years — from harassment and censorship to violent attacks on reporters.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
