Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ winning mentality was on full display as he led the Kansas City Chiefs past the New York Giants 22-9 on Sunday Night Football for their first victory of the season.
Before the Chiefs pulled away, they were locked in a 6-6 tie in the first half, but Mahomes made a play that sparked a fire within the team when he didn’t give up on a backwards pass that Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke scooped up for a potential return touchdown before the two-time NFL MVP ripped the ball from his hands.
After the game, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid highlighted the play as a shining example of Mahomes doing whatever is necessary to earn a win.
“That’s how he rolls,” Reid said. “He goes 100 miles an hour. … It seems like every week he does something like that. The guys know that he’s all in. It’s not like he’s just throwing the ball back there. He’s going to do whatever it takes to come out on top in the game.”
Mahomes threw for 224 yards and a touchdown on 22-of-37 passing, but it was enough to secure the victory against the winless Giants.
It’s been a rough start for the Chiefs as they try to chase their fourth straight trip to the Super Bowl, but they should be comforted by knowing Mahomes will do everything in his power to drive the team forward.
Kansas City will look to keep the momentum going when it faces the Baltimore Ravens in a marquee matchup between AFC powerhouses next Sunday.
