Newport County confirm surprise appointment of Premier League title winner as new manager

Newport County confirm the surprise appointment of Premier League title winner Christian Fuchs as their new manager.

The former Leicester City defender has been appointed the new manager of the League Two strugglers on a “long-term contract”.

Fuchs takes over from David Hughes who was sacked last week with the side bottom of the table and in need of picking up points to avoid a relegation battle, with a busy schedule lined up.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Newport County AFC are delighted to announce the appointment of former Austrian international skipper and 2016 Premier League title winner Christian Fuchs as their new manager.

Fuchs, 39, a cultured left-back in a 21-year senior playing career studded by stops at SV Mattersberg, VfL Bochum, Bundesliga clubs Mainz and Schalke plus, of course, Leicester City, encompassing 493 League appearances, has signed a long-term contract at Rodney Parade – taking over with immediate effect.

Neunkirchen-born Fuchs, who, leaves MLS outfit Charlotte FC where he was number two to former Brentford and Aston Villa manager Dean Smith for two years,, replaces Dave Hughes, the Welshman departing the Port after Newport’s 1-0 reverse at League Two relegation rivals Shrewsbury last Saturday – a 14th defeat of the season in all competitions.

Fuchs led his country between 2012-2016, representing Austria at the 2008 Euro Championship, hosted by Switzerland and the Austrians – also at the Euros in France eight years on, retiring after gaining 78 caps, this after progressing emphatically through the youth and U-21 levels.

Arguably, though, it was at Leicester’s King Power Stadium that 1.86m Fuchs etched his deepest mark. Alongside former England raider Jamie Vardy, Riyard Mahrez, Robert Huth, N’Golo Kante. Wes Morgan, Ben Chilwell and Danish stopper Kasper Schmeichel.

Guided by ex-Chelsea maestro di tattiche calcistiche Claudio Ranieri, the Foxes 5000/1 rank outsiders, lifted the Premiership title for the first and only occasion in their 141-year history – qualifying for the Champions League the following season.

County Chairman Huw Jenkins, who secured Fuchs after an intensive managerial search over the last five days, said, “We see Christian as the sort of man to lead our club forward. I believe he matches our ambition and goals for Newport County FC.

“I do feel we can now look forward with a great deal of optimism. We’ll look to improve our current situation in League Two and take things from there.

“Christian is ambitious and wants, one day, to manage in the Premier League, we believe he shares our strong belief in what Newport County can eventually become.”

Fuchs is expected to draft in an assistant of his choice, and will speak with the Port squad for the first time prior to his first Newport match – at Oldham’s Boundary Park in crucial League Two fixture on Saturday.

Here’s how fans reacted as Newport County confirm the surprise appointment of a Premier League title winner as their new manager…

@TintyBucketHats: Up the Fuching County. Back the new gaffer ✊ Oppose Huw & call Jenkins out continually till he answers us 🤝 🖤🧡

@DanFinchy3: Woah okay. Interesting.

@bayleeM9_: What on earth

@c94_utc: HJ is a fucking clown. What a massive gamble instead of a safe pair of hands. Not convinced by this at all. Hope I’m proved wrong.

@Callum_Boyle_: Where on Earth has this come from 😂

@ReeceDSport: Sorry what FM save have I just woken up in

@lee1978lcfc: Good luck @FuchsOfficial 🦊 #lcfc #legend 💙🦊

@WillB_2003: World class. Hope he turns them around

@KGibson_93: I thought Flynn would have been nailed on for the job. Definitely going to struggle to find another FL club of even Newport haven’t gone for him

@Harrisonctfc: Safe to say Newport fans In the replies aren’t the happiest 🤣

@mrcraigmoore1: The most random move of the year?😭😭😭

@a_cheevers6: I beg your pardon??

@NCAFCThoughts: Got to back him and hope that we’ve unearthed a gem. At least it’s not Mark Sampson. Up the Austrian Exiles 🇦🇹 🟠⚫️

@1912Exiles: Surprised the club didn’t go for “Fuchs Up for the challenge”, but there we go. History suggests that clubs in our position at this stage in the season only get one chance to get these appointments right. Do you think we have?

@cufcdanny: Proper football manager vibes that 😂. Completely out the blue

@Gazz_TheRover: Can’t see it being long before they Fuch him off.

@mightywhitespod: Didn’t expect to read that

@James_McE1: Well thats random as fuck.

@Stephen19794: He doesn’t give 2 Fuchs what has gone before .. clean slate starts today, and he will keep the county up.

@ARLukomski: What in the Football Manager save, 3 seasons in, is going on?

@andy_ncfc: Never a dull moment. Couldn’t have gone for a less experienced coach based on those linked. The lack of experience and knowledge of this level worries me. Shit or bust for Jenkins now after this for me @1912Exiles

@JamiePrest1427: Well that’s Newport playing national league football next year… 😔

@CFC_CS: Members of Leicester’s title winning squad moving into management. We really are all getting old as fuck aren’t we?

I’m sorry…WHAT?! https://t.co/cj1KdJXui1 pic.twitter.com/0GjZalv7is

We said this next appointment for Newport was huge. We thought it would have to be someone with a lot of experience to help them grind results out…not this! 😳

I really do fear for them now, fair play if it works but I don’t see the vision https://t.co/LgYlMltYCp
