Taylor Sheridan’s Landman, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore and Sam Elliott, returns Sunday with Season 2. What do Rotten Tomatoes critics think of the new season?
The synopsis for the series reads, “Set in the boomtowns of West Texas, Landman is a modern tale of fortune seeking amongst roughnecks and wildcat billionaires – fueling an oil boom so big it’s reshaping the climate, the economy and geopolitics.”
Created by Sheridan and Christian Wallace, Landman Season 2 begins streaming at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT on Paramount+ with Episode 1, which is titled Death and a Sunset. Landman Season 2 also stars Andy Garcia, Ali Larter, Jacob Lofland, Michelle Randolph, Paulina Chávez, Kayla Wallace, Mark Collie, James Jordan and Colm Feore.
The logline for Landman Season 2 reads, “As oil rises from the earth, so do secrets – and Tommy Norris’s (Thornton) breaking point may be closer than he realizes. Facing mounting pressure from M-Tex Oil, Cami Miller (Moore), and the shadow of his kin, survival in West Texas isn’t noble – it’s brutal. And sooner or later something’s got to break.”
As of this publication, Landman Season 2 has earned a 78% “fresh” score from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on nine reviews. RT’s Critics Consensus, audience summary and Popcornmeter rating are still pending.
What Are Individual Critics Saying About ‘Landman’ Season 2?
J. Kelly Nestruck of the Globe and Mail is among the critics on RT who gives Landman Season 2 a “fresh” rating, saying the new season is an improvement on Season 1. Nestruck writes on RT, “It was possible to overlook [the first season’s] shortcomings — namely the crassly caricatured supporting female characters. Season 2 begins with an improvement in that area.”
Tim Glanfield of The Times (U.K.) also gives Landman a “fresh” rating on RT, writing, “For roughnecks who have been punching holes waiting for their next dose of Texas tea, the return of Landman once again drills deep into a different perspective on American life.”
Clint Worthington of RogerEbert.com is among the critics on RT who gives Season 2 of Landman a “rotten” rating, writing, “Now, with its second season underway, the show struggles to find new reserves to plumb and veers off in some crazy directions to do it.”
Katie Doll of CBR isn’t a fan of Landman Season 2, either, writing in her “rotten” review summary on RT, “Those who respect women and enjoy business-based dramas without background knowledge of the industry should probably continue to steer clear of the testosterone-fueled series.”
As of the publication of this article, Landman Season 2’s 78% “fresh” RT critics’ score is neck-and-neck (or is it roughneck?) with Season 1’s score.
Season 1’s 78% critics’ score on RT is based on 37 reviews, with a Critics Consensus that reads, “Landman plumbs much of the same territory as other Taylor Sheridan-penned series, but having Billy Bob Thornton on hand turns this Texas crude into highly watchable fuel.”
Landman Season 1 also earned a 65% “fresh” Popcornmeter score based on 1,000-plus verified user ratings.
Landman Season 2 begins with Episode 1 on Sunday at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT on Paramount+. All 10 episodes of Landman Season 1 are also available on the streaming platform.
