Rotherham boss: Luton player should’ve been sent off when referee blew for foul

Rotherham boss Matt Hamshaw felt Luton player Mads Andersen should’ve been sent off when the referee blew for a foul.

The Millers side picked up a good point as they played out a goalless draw at promotion-chasing Luton Town, extending their League One unbeaten run to seven games and climbing to 11th place.

A resilient back three led by young Hamish Douglas and Dan Gore and Kian Spence putting in an defiant performance with a second straight clean sheet.

The Hatters had most of the territory and possession but it was Rotherham who came closest to scoring, with Jordan Hugill seeing his downward header kept out by Josh Keeley.

He also nearly got on the end of Dan Gore’s curling cross too, only to be forced off with a limp as the first half came to a close.

Former referee Keith Hackett tweeted on the incident: “The Rotherham Utd player had a clear run on goal and a strong probability of controlling the ball and having a shot on goal.

“Covering defender behind play – DOGSO fulfilled Anderson should have received a red card.”

The result mean that Luton were up to 8th, with 23 points from 15 games, while Rotherham climbed to 11th, with 22 points from 16 games.

No advantage played here, an absolute shocker. Whistle went as it was evident Rotherham were going to have a 1v1 situation. #RUFC pic.twitter.com/ddcIm6MbfC

Would have taken a point before the game.
Defended well.
Just a shame about Hugills injury and obviously this mistake by the ref.#rufc pic.twitter.com/tCWzBLZkcf

Matt Hamshaw said: “Unbelievable pleased. I think you’ve only got to look at circumstances surrounding it. I felt if we’d have had more attacking options on the pitch.

“We were a threat first half and obviously Jordan Hugill rolls his ankle and Martin Sherif feeling his hamstring slightly so I couldn’t really take any risk with position we’re out in that area at the moment but I thought we played some real good stuff first half.

“Look, I can’t stand here and say second half we weren’t that much of a goal threat. I didn’t think we was but I think the energy, the grit, the determination, the clean sheet speaks volumes of the group.”

Interviewer: “Yeah, and to do it with effectively no fits and halves and no strikers, it’s about the effort that went into that performance today, doesn’t it?”

Matt: “Yeah, and look, I’ve said to them all along, it’s easy to use excuses. And if we’re going to be honest, we’d probably have a lot of excuses at this moment in time, and it would have been easy to come here and kind of roll over, lose 1-0, 2-0, and think, no, that’s not a bad result.

“And that’s the mentality I want to change in this group. I don’t think that they lack that. I think that they’re gaining confidence from this run that we’re on.

“But look, you go through the team today and again, as last week, we lost four players who were in the kind of squad last week to this week. And it just seems that the look we’re having is ridiculous.

“But we need to talk about that group and how well they’ve all done.”

Interviewer: “Not just unlucky with the injuries as well. But one particular big moment, 10 minutes before half time when the refs stopped play, he could easily have allowed it to carry on and that could have cost you a goal there, Matt.”

Matt: “I was very frustrated. I think that obviously we’re in, we get told that the referees are going to try and play on a little bit longer and as soon as he gets his whistle I thought that he was going to send him off because I felt Martin was what last man. But luckily you sometimes get him, you sometimes don’t and I think that would have kicked us on a little bit and we looked defensively set.

“I can’t really remember the Jacob Brown one where he’s kind of flicked it and it’s rolled through to Daws but I can’t really remember having much trouble on our goal and that’s credit to the lads but a real good away performance.

“We want to be on the front foot more attacking wise, I can’t stand here and say but I think the defensive set up, the organisation, the will to fight for the badge and fight for others is fantastic.”

🗣️ “Unbelievably pleased. You only have to look at the circumstances surrounding it (injuries).”

Here’s how fans reacted after the Rotherham boss felt that Luton player should’ve been sent off when the referee blew for a foul…

@TomStirk1992: Refereeing standards are on the floor

@kevjohnson77: It’s either advantage or a red card, to stop and show a yellow is criminal

@MightyMillers20: Fucking howler from the ref, it’s either a red card or he plays on

@Dec_Martin7: You don’t pull that back unless you’re sending the defender off… That is a diabolical decision, absolute disgrace. #rufc

@CraigGoater87: 3 options towards with this pal. 1. You play on let mcwilliams go through see whatever happens and then book the player. 2. Let mcwilliams play on but if defender gets the ball pull it back for free kick and then book player. 3. free kick & red card cos theres no1 covering him

@TomElliottBAFC: Now you know how it feels lads! Your man should have been sent off for the same last week against us #rufc #bafc

@ltfcat: I can’t believe we got away with this. Thought if he was blowing up with them 1v1, Andersen was off. Then he just… wasn’t

@LewisRhys: Most clear red card you’ll see this weekend. Joke

@GazzaWozza: Jones as well for kicking out at Benson! If he’d had done a Luton then he would have gone

@Dylanrufc_: The state of referees in this league

@Nozza1903: Every weekend I go into it thinking that EFL refs can’t get any worse than the week before yet they never seem to surprise me

@KiranExley: Gets worse the more you watch it. Shocker #rufc

@Callum__RUFC: Absolute howler from the ref we’d have scored as well

@rufcmiller89: Where do they find these shit refs #rufc

@joe04johnson: The only way he stops the game is if it’s a red.

@officialyspeedo: Id be on the blower to the PGMOL about this, everything just seems off … Good job im not the manager id be sent off or something for going crazy

@fut_trader_D: Was thinking fair enough if you’re sending last man off, but no. That’s two disgraceful decisions within 5 seconds.
