The best hoop earrings are among the most essential pieces of jewelry in one’s collection. They’re a must-have, a go-to, a classic staple—not to mention, an instant confidence boost. Regardless of shape, size, material—from yellow gold to gold plated to sterling silver—or even price tag, hoop earrings are one of the most surefire ways to instantly feel more put together.

But don’t just take our word for it. Jeweler Jennifer Fisher, who is quite possibly the biggest hoop earring proponent, has said it’s the one jewelry piece her clients rely on most when wanting to feel more polished—proving, once again, that there’s something to be said about the power of a good accessory.

Fisher has had a hand in accessorizing everyone from Jennifer Lopez to former first lady Michelle Obama in her coveted hoop earrings, so who better to discuss starting and growing a hoop earring collection with than the Queen of Hoops herself?

“Your first pair should be something clean that you can wear morning, noon, and night,” says Fisher, recommending small hoop earrings to start. “Your fifth pair of hoops should be something that has texture and maybe a larger diameter. Something that rounds out your collection.”

Vogue’s Favorite Hoop Earrings:

As Fisher told us, hoop earrings are the blue jeans of the jewelry world–timeless, comfortable, and a wardrobe piece everyone should own. “I always say that hoop earrings are like the perfect pair of jeans—you need a few styles to round out your collection,” Fisher continues. “Your foundation is normally something pretty classic, and then as you grow your collection, your selection should become more diverse. A great example: For your first pair of jeans, you probably aren’t going to buy a wide-leg, long version. You’re probably going to go with a classic straight-leg version, so I suggest the same idea when you’re buying hoops.” Once you have your 18k gold huggie earrings in your jewelry box, for example, you can start to branch out to medium hoops in 14k white gold, chunky hoops in mixed metals, big hoops with a pavé finish… the list goes on (as does the number of jewelry brands who offer silver, gold vermeil, and solid gold hoop earrings).
