Preview for New York Jets @ New England Patriots
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye says there’ll be no let up even though the team are closing in on a playoff spot.
The Patriots sit top of the AFC East with an 8-2 record and welcome the woeful New York Jets (2-7) to Foxborough tomorrow for Thursday Night Football.
Maye and his team-mates have surpassed expectations this season, so much so that coach Mike Vrabel attempted to cut them some slack this week in training. Former Titans coach Vrabel offered for the team to practise inside on Tuesday with the Massachusetts weather dipping to a real-feel temperature of around 20F. He was also willing to cut short a team meeting to allow the players to rest up before the clash with the Jets.
Both offers were rejected with Maye explaining the players were eager not to let things slide, even by a fraction.
“I think it’s to not take shortcuts,” Maye said. “It’s to not let little things lack or slack. I think the biggest thing is to stay with what we’ve been doing. Try to keep the same mentality. [Vrabel] asked [Tuesday] to go inside, and we wanted to go outside. Just trying to not let the little things go and know that these will matter and have mattered for us in the past and will show up again.”
If things are ticking over nicely for the Patriots, the same cannot be said for the Jets, despite last week’s win over the Cleveland Browns.
The Jets could have Justin Fields at quarterback tomorrow night and could have Garrett Wilson at wide receiver, but no-one really knows.
Fields may get one more chance despite a terrible display against the Browns. He completed just two passes beyond the line of scrimmage and threw for 54 total yards.
Tyrod Taylor waits in the wings but coach Aaron Glenn was not willing to discuss who he would go with. Glenn said: “Please don’t ask me anything about the quarterback because you know I’m not going to tell you, and I don’t want to waste my time when it comes to that, when it comes to who’s starting.”
He was equally evasive when asked about an ESPN report that stated Wilson’s knee injury would keep him out for up to four weeks.
Glenn refused to answer and told reporters to ask the report’s author, Rich Cimini, in what turned into a petty exchange.
Prediction for New York Jets @ New England Patriots
Maye and the Patriots will march on in what could be a fairly one-sided encounter.
Prediction: New England Patriots 34-10 New York Jets
