The Best Dressed Stars of the Week Nailed Demure (But Not Boring) Dressing

An all-black wardrobe is a lot things—timeless, stealthy-chic even—but you likely do not equate an outfit devoid of any color with descriptors like bold or statement-worthy. This week, however, the best dressed stars proved that demure dressing need not be boring. In fact, it can be quite the contrary: Their understated ensembles shone on the red carpets, thanks to interesting silhouettes and textures, paired with dazzling accessories.

Take Jennifer Lawrence, whose black and white Lii outfit showed that a white tee can be glamorous—thanks to a sculptural mini skirt to go with it. At the CFDA Awards, Rihanna also donned a classic black trench coat, and her pleated white Alaïa trousers instantly made it feel fresh and modern. What these designs lacked in eye-popping hues, they made up for in interesting shapes and finishes. Sometimes, it is the small details that can make an outfit!

Sharp tailoring had many moments this week, too. To promote her new book, The Look, Michelle Obama wore a chic Chanel suit—one of the first stars to wear a Matthieu Blazy creation. Another star who embraced their own take on suiting up? Taylor Swift, who stepped out for dinner at The Corner Store with Sabrina Carpenter in New York this weekend—choosing a pleated Thom Browne skirt and collared shirt to do so. It was like a grown-up (and super stylish) take on a school uniform.
