In my opinion, the best products are the ones that are so essential, you can’t remember a time without them. Exhibit A: my beloved L.L.Bean Hanging Toiletry Bag. I know I’ve had it longer than I’ve been a parent, and my babies are now 19 and 21 years old. If you don’t want to do the math, I’ll help you out—this $40 toiletry organizer has been on my packing list for 20-plus years.
While the product is clearly made for travel, I actually use it both at home and on the road. Because I keep my daily essentials in the bag at home, it’s always ready to go. When it’s time to pack for a trip, it’s already loaded with my must-have, yet easy-to-forget items, like extra contact lenses and solution. I just add my comb, brush, and daily makeup bag, zip it up, and pop it in my suitcase so I’m ready to fly out the door on a moment’s notice.

It’s really all the compartments that make this toiletry bag so functional. When I’m on the go, it serves as an extension of my medicine cabinet, allowing easy access to important toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, and other daily must-haves. Zipped up, it’s a compact, packable unit, but unfurled, you have multiple sections to choose from, including two zippered pouches inside the top flap, a main compartment with soft mesh pockets, and two easy-access side-zip storage compartments. The best part is the sturdy, built-in hook that lets you hang it on a hook in your hotel bathroom, so you don’t have to take over the bathroom countertop with all your stuff.
L.L. Bean has updated this toiletry bag a bit since mine was made by integrating one of the zipper pouch flaps into the main bag, adding handy side compartments, and throwing in a removable shower caddy. And while I do find my older version to still be quite perfect, I’m not going to argue with these genius design improvements. One thing that has stayed the same is the use of water-resistant nylon that makes it super easy to clean.

Reading through the reviews, I can see I’m not the only person who has had my L.L. Bean hanging toiletry bag for decades. One reviewer wrote, “I had to replace my old large L.L. Bean organizer after 20+ years. The medium size is perfect, and it has plenty of compartments.” Meanwhile, another shopper shared, “This is my second travel bag from LL Bean. I had the first one for about 20 years! It’s a great bag and well-made. Other bags just don’t measure up.”
