Man Utd ‘deserved more’ in Spurs draw says goalscorer De Ligt

Matthijs De Ligt felt Manchester United “deserved more” from their 2-2 draw with Tottenham after the defender’s rescued a point for his side in North London.

Spurs looked to be heading for a dramatic win after Mathys Tel and Richarlison’s late goals but the Dutch centre-back headed in the equaliser in the sixth minute of stoppage time to ensure the game ended level.

Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half and dominated much of the game, leaving De Ligt still frustrated with a point despite avoiding a first defeat in four games.

Speaking to TNT Sports, De Ligt said: “Luckily we got a point, I think we deserved more the way we played, I felt the second half we were a little tired. We didn’t get the chance to get out of our half.

“Their first goal was a bit lucky, I’m a bit upset about that, but I’m proud of how the team fought back and got a point at a difficult stadium.”

De Ligt: Spurs and Forest draws show progress

United are now unbeaten in five games with three wins during that run as they look to be finally clicking under Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils also came back late on to draw 2-2 with Nottingham Forest last weekend and De Ligt felt those two games show a sign of progress despite not picking up victories.

He added: “Last year we lost against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham 1-0, but last week and today you see we have the fire in our bellies to fight and get a point.

“The season is long, drawing thee games is more important than losing.

“You saw today we are really dangerous, we have a lot of speed up front, we are really stable, we know our strengths and utilise them.

“Today we had more opportunities to get in behind them because they are vulnerable, we played a good game and I think we deserved a little more.”

Subtitute Tel thought he had played his part in a stunning comeback win when he turned inside the box and fired into the top corner but accepted a point, having looked for much of the game like they were heading for a fourth straight home defeat.

He told BBC Sport: “This is football. Sometimes 50-50, sometimes something else. I want to stay positive because the reaction in the second half was really good. We showed great mentality.

“First half we tried things. We were really patient. We lost two points. We get one but we deserved to win this game. Like I say we need to stay positive and keep going. Working hard every day.”
