Tottenham speak out on player threatened with a gun as police make an arrest

Tottenham speak out on player Destiny Udogie who has been named as the footballer threatened with a gun as police make an arrest.

The Sun first reported that the Premier League footballer was threatened with a gun while walking with a friend on a London street at 11:14pm on September 6th. The dispute reportedly arose after Udogie ended their professional relationship.

A 31-year-old top football agent, who represents an England international, was arrested last month on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent, blackmail, driving without a licence, and is also being investigated for allegedly blackmailing and threatening one of Udogie’s friends.

The agent had since been detained after a raid on his £2m Hertfordshire home, bailed on September 9th with a no-contact order regarding the player, and had not been charged.

Both the footballer and his friend were unharmed; the player could not be named for legal reasons, until further reports emerged this week.

The agent is banned from visiting Tottenham’s training ground, barred from leaving the UK until a judge approved a bail variation last month and has since retrieved his passport for pre-booked trips abroad but must return it to police next month.

Tottenham confirmed they’re supporting Udogie and his family but declined further comment due to the ongoing legal matter.

Despite the incident, Udogie played in Tottenham’s matches against West Ham (a week later) and started in the Champions League game against Copenhagen on Tuesday. The Metropolitan Police are continuing their investigation.

A source said: “This was a terrifying incident and one which has sent shockwaves through the business side of football.

“The player was understandably shaken up — to have threats made against you with a gun is shocking.

“He reported it right away. It was the right thing to do for his safety.

“He has been supported by his friends and club and they all hope it will not impact his performances.

“But there will be serious questions about why this happened, which the police are now trying to answer.”

A Tottenham Hotspur spokesperson has now said: “We have been providing support for Destiny and his family since the incident and will continue to do so.

“Given this is a legal matter, we cannot comment any further.”

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: “Police were called at 23.14hrs on Saturday, September 6, to reports a man in his twenties had been threatened with a firearm on Cockfosters Parade, Barnet.

“Officers spoke to the victim and during the course of their investigation it was also reported another man in his twenties had also allegedly been blackmailed and threatened by the same individual.

“No injuries were reported in either incident.

“A 31-year-old man was arrested on Monday, September 8 on suspicion of possession of firearms with intent, blackmail and driving without a licence.

“He has been bailed while enquiries continue.”

As mentioned, he impressed for Spurs on Tuesday night, helping his side win 4-0 against Copenhagen in the Champions League.

Udogie won 100 per cent of his ground duels against the Danish outfit, showing athleticism and willing running.

Paul O Keefe wrote: “Decent first 45 although we are being allowed to play around them. Udogie adds so much more balance to the team and one DM. Good opportunity now to build some confidence.”

Frank has previously in high praise of Udogie, describing him as “exceptional” and “unstoppable”.

A Micky van de Ven stunner was the pick of Spurs’ four goals in midweek, with Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert and Joao Palhinha also on the scoresheet.
