Liverpool fans make their feelings known as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s mural gets vandalised on his return to Merseyside.
His 2019 mural outside Anfield was defaced overnight with white paint and the words “rat” and “adios el rata” (Spanish for “goodbye rat”) added beneath his quote. He faces his boyhood club as a Real Madrid player in Tuesday’s Champions League match.
The mural, created by artist Akse and organised by The Anfield Wrap after Liverpool’s 2019 Champions League win, has since been cleaned.

Alexander-Arnold’s departure led to quite the backlash from supporters, though he received a warm send-off during the title celebrations.
He said that his love for Liverpool remains unchanged regardless of the reception expected to come his way.
On Monday, he joined Real Madrid’s contingent to lay a wreath for Diogo Jota and his brother Andre, who died in a July car crash.
Alexander-Arnold’s message read: “My mate Diogo, you are so missed but still so loved.
“Yours and Andre’s memory will always live on.
“I smile every time I think about you and will always remember the great times we shared.
“Miss you mate, every day. Love Trent and family. Forever 20. YNWA.”

While Xabi Alonso will get a warm reception from the Anfield faithful, he believes Alexander-Arnold should relish facing his boyhood team, if selected to play: “We haven’t spoken about that precisely [the reception that awaits Alexander-Arnold] but we have spoken about the team and the club,” the Real head coach said.
“He has to have his own feelings and enjoy it his own way. So I am not going to say how he needs to feel it. For sure his history is different from mine, he was born and bred in Liverpool. I remember him from a young age in the academy and then coming to the first team and winning the Champions League. So he needs to enjoy the moment because it is nice to be back.”
Liverpool manager Arne Slot on ex-Reds right-back Trent Alexander Arnold returning to the club with Real Madrid: “I can only tell you what kind of reception he gets from me. I only have good memories from him as a player and as a human being.
“I have memories of working with him that are only positive and memories of watching him when I’m in front of the TV and they are only positive. I can remember multiple great moments of him in a Liverpool shirt.
“He will get a warm welcome by me, let’s see if he is on the pitch and then how the fans react I’ve no clue but he gets a warm welcome from me, that’s for sure.”

Liverpool fans make their feelings known as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s mural gets vandalised, here’s the Twitter reaction…
@jbsoutar: Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid after playing hundreds of games, winning everything, and dedicating most of his life to Liverpool Football Club. How tapped do you have to be to boo the guy, let alone vandalise a mural of him?
@Smithpeteralb72: Pathetic! We should never forget all Trent did for our club. He is our opponent tonight but not our enemy. #Respect
@JustinGreendog: That’s absolutely appalling, he’s an lfc legend regardless of him leaving!! He still achieved greatness with us and that should always be respected. Horrendous that is 😡
@B2Life33: Fans don’t own players, it’s their right to leave the club if they choose to even if they do it in the manner we don’t like. This says more about certain LFC fans than it does TAA. Grow up. Move on. Players come/go; the club is forever
@JayGB1982: All for booing him on the pitch. But making a mess of the City is where lines must be drawn. Should it have had a proper cover-up? Probably. But vandalism like this is just immature.
@JennyC97x: Sad to see. Mural needs to go though otherwise these things will happen. Need one for the current players that will inspire them.
@AFCMet: I will never ever understand the hate he gets from Liverpool fans. They have their reasons, but I will never understand them.
@AGoldstein1993: Despite what you think of the way he left the club. That’s someone’s house too
@TheTradingGree1: People ask me why I dislike Liverpool fans so much. This is a great example of why. Absolute zero respect for a guy that won everything for Liverpool and wanted to test himself in Spain. Disgusting.
@lfcguy76: Grow up people. A local kid who won it all for the club and wanted a new challenge. Could he have handled his exit better? Probably, but have you always left your job perfectly? Definitely not. We also have no idea what happened behind the scenes with FSG and his contract.
@sfaza1993: Surprised it’s still up tbh
@TheFull90Redmen: I don’t understand why this mural hasn’t been painted over already. Better to paint over it completely than have it all vandalised.
@MikeAndrews34: Massively disrespectful to the artist. All because a player left to better himself.
