PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 13-year-old boy wearing a costume was hit by a car and seriously injured in Southeast Portland Friday night.
Portland police said they responded to the scene on reports of a crash around 7:45 p.m. near Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard and Southeast 22nd Avenue. SE Hawthorne Blvd then closed for about an hour between SE 21st and SE 23rd avenues before reopening.
“The person struck was a 13-year-old boy wearing a costume, so it appears to be Halloween related,” said Sgt. Kevin Allen, a Portland Police Bureau spokesperson. “His family was at the scene and they went to the hospital with him.”

Police are continuing to investigate. Allen said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. There was no indication that intoxication was a factor. The driver, who was not arrested or given a citation, was released after talking with the police.
“This is yet another reminder that kids and adults are out on this Halloween, and the darkness and weather limits visibility,” Allen said.
Police are encouraging people to use the roads in a safe manner, drive sober and under the speed limit, and expect the unexpected.
