Detain British Commentator Sami Hamdi, Revokes Visa

British journalist Sami Hamdi faces deportation after United States officials revoked his visa, sparking claims of retaliation over criticism of Israel.

U.S. immigration authorities have detained British commentator and journalist Sami Hamdi, revoked his visa, and announced plans to deport him rather than allow him to complete his speaking tour across the country, according to civil rights advocates.

Hamdi, a London-based political analyst and editor known for his commentary on Middle East affairs, was taken into custody at San Francisco International Airport on the evening of Saturday October 25, 2025. He had just spoken at a gala hosted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in California and was due to appear at another CAIR event in Florida the following day.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations said on Sunday October 26, 2025, that it was demanding Hamdi’s immediate release, describing his detention as “an act of political retaliation” for his public criticism of the Israeli government. The organization accused U.S. authorities of targeting Muslim speakers and activists for their views on the ongoing Gaza conflict.

In a statement, CAIR said, “It is deeply troubling that a respected journalist has been detained and threatened with deportation simply for exercising his right to free expression. This action sends a chilling message to Muslim voices and to anyone speaking out against injustice.”

United States Department of Homeland Security has not publicly commented on the specific reasons for Hamdi’s detention. However, officials confirmed that his visa had been revoked following “administrative review.”

Hamdi’s detention comes amid a broader tightening of U.S. immigration and visa policies under President Donald Trump. Since January, the administration has expanded social media screening for visa applicants and increased enforcement actions against foreign nationals accused of violating visa terms. Rights groups say that includes deportations of students and residents who have criticized Israel’s conduct in Gaza.

Observers say Hamdi’s case could further inflame tensions between the administration and Muslim advocacy groups, which have accused U.S. authorities of using immigration policy to silence dissent.

Hamdi, who frequently appears on international news outlets to comment on Middle East politics, has been an outspoken critic of Israel’s military operations in Gaza and of Western governments’ support for them.

CAIR said its legal team is working with immigration attorneys to challenge the deportation order and called on supporters to urge authorities to release Hamdi immediately.

As of late Sunday October 26, 2025, Hamdi remained in U.S. custody pending removal proceedings.
