The Director for Enlargement at the European Commission, Valentina Superti, during her visit to Tirana, held a meeting with the head of the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), Altin Dumani.
According to a statement from the European Union delegation in Tirana regarding the meeting, the discussion was very fruitful, focusing on the important work of SPAK in the fight against organized crime.
The Special Prosecution against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) is one of the institutions created within the framework of the Justice Reform in Albania, whose work has been assessed as impactful in advancing Albania’s EU membership negotiations.
Soon, Chief Prosecutor Dumani will be welcomed in Brussels, where he will present SPAK’s achievements during his mandate, a significant contribution to Albania’s fight against high-level corruption and organized crime, as well as to the country’s progress on the path to EU membership.
The EU delegation in Tirana stated that the essential work of SPAK must continue with the same determination and strength under the new Special Chief Prosecutor, adding that the selection and appointment of Dumani’s successor will continue to be closely monitored.
Altin Dumani is the second head of SPAK since the institution’s creation, following Arben Kraja, while his mandate ends on December 18, 2025.
The Special Prosecution Against Organized Crime and Corruption was established on December 19, 2019, as one of the new institutions of the Justice Reform.
The eight prosecutors of SPAK have a 9-year mandate, while the mandate of the head of SPAK is 3 years without the right to re-election.
The good results of the special structure against organized crime and corruption, SPAK, are positive steps that have been highlighted in the European Parliament’s report.
Authorities in Brussels have emphasized several times that it is vital for Albania to continue showing concrete progress in key areas. In this context, the independence of the special structure against organized crime and corruption, SPAK, must be fully maintained. (October 20)
